The team, made up of four Brookfield East stu- dents and one from West Bend East, has been meet- ing for the last several weeks at Hal's Harley- Davidson. Team member Robert D'Amato said he wasn't sure where the team would work if it didn't have the space at Hal's. "Some of the other teams don't have that edge," D'Am- ato said, crediting the deal- ership with providing both tools and space. The students are able to use an entire service bay at Hal's and some technicians stay after work to help and answer questions. Hal's Marketing and Events Man- ager Kerry Schmidt said the company tries to differenti- ate itself by being family- focused and involved in the community. She said help- ing the team provides another avenue to con- tribute. The bike will eventually be unveiled June 5 at the Iron Horse Hotel in Milwau- kee. On June 6, the bike will be entered in events at the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association Vin- tage Race Weekend at Road America. In September, the bike will be auctioned to support future BUILD pro- grams. There is still a lot of work to be done before then. The Brookfield group will be competing against teams from Shorewood, St. Fran- cis, Bradley Tech, and a Mil- waukee community team. "Does it look like we're halfway when we look up on our bench? No, not at all," said Joe Haupt, the project coordinator. Now in its fourth year, the BUILD program aims to give students an opportuni- ty to develop business, trade and interpersonal skills while working with mentors to learn vintage motorcycle restoration. The competi- tion was founded in 2011 by the Iron Horse. Haupt is one of a number of project mentors for the Brookfield team. He runs his own remodeling compa- ny, but also races vintage motorcycles. The students on the team include D'Amato, Gabe Haupt, Jack Leonovicz, and Mitch Michaelsky of Brook- field East High School and Brett Mueller of West Bend East. Joe Haupt said the BUILD competition is open to stu- dents in all grades, but this year's group is mostly sophomores with one junior. While some of the students have taken classes in engi- neering or small engines, none have been through the entire process of building a bike, Haupt said. Despite the lack of experi- ence, Haupt and the other mentors try to give the stu- dents as much control as possible. "I'm always urging that we mentors put our hands in our pockets whenever wrenches are necessary," Haupt said. D'Amato said the mentors are good about helping the students learn as they go. He has started work on his own bike at home. "It's really helped me. Without this program, I don't think I could have done it at all," he said. Students are given the chance to contribute to both the design and performance of the bike, Haupt said, which can cause some ten- sion within the project. The bike has to look good, but also perform well on race day. "We're having some very real-world debates about form versus function," he said, describing it as a microcosm of what happens in a normal build. Haupt said he hope the BUILD experience will be good for the students involved, but also draw attention to high school technical education pro- grams that are losing their effectiveness due to a lack of funding. He noted that when he talks to people involved in engineering, they tell him how important it is for engi- neers to have hands-on experience.
