That proved pivotal for the Brookfield East High School boys volleyball team and disastrous for Brookfield Central. The junior outside hitter for the Spartans was nearly unstoppable near the net, collecting 16 kills to lead East to a 25-21, 25-17, 25-7 Greater Metro Conference victory last month. Klassen was consistent throughout the match, collecting six kills in the first game followed by four and six kills in the final two games. Thirteen kills came from the left side of the court. "That's my main position (outsider hitter) and I like the left side of the court," Klassen said. "I felt I hit it pretty good tonight most definitely. "I like to get the swings, but I know teammates can put the ball down too, so I like when the ball is distributed. It was a good allaround win for us." East coach Tim Owen agreed that Klassen had a good night attacking the ball. "He's an outside (hitter) so that's where he's going to be primarily and he hit it well tonight," Owen said. "He hit some nice line balls, he hit some sharp angle balls, he hit the ball deep corner. "In general I thought we did hit the ball well and we were able to put it away more times than Central. I think a big reason for that is they struggled with serve receive a little bit and that opened up some free balls in some situations where Robert F. Borkowski/Special to The Freeman At left, Brookfield East's Graydon Schroeder sends a kill over the net as Brookfield Central's Tyler Grey-Hoehn defends. Above, Brookfield Central's Jarred Shipman digs the ball against Brookfield East. we could exploit it a little bit." In a tight first game, two of Klassen's six kills accounted for two of East's final five points, and he was serving on the final point when a Central attack kill was hit out of bounds. "He's definitely a nice weapon," Central coach Ken Nash said of Klassen. "East has a couple of guys who can take over the match. That's a nice situation to be in." The Spartans took an early 7-1 lead in the second game as Klassen had two kills while junior middle blocker Graydon Schroeder and junior setter Josh Schmirler each added a kill. Central tied the game at 10-10, but East outscored the Lancers 15-7 the rest of the way as an ace by junior libero Adam Wessel sealed the victory. Wessel finished with a teamhigh three aces and seven digs. Four times in the final game East had runs of at least four points, and the Spartans ended the match scoring the final seven consecutive points, punctuated by back-to-back service aces from junior defensive specialist Luke Bartsch. "Our goal is to be playing our best at the end (of the season) and we have a ways to go to get there, but certainly it was a step in the right direction tonight," Owen said. Freshman Andre Sydnor led the Lancers with five kills, while senior Luke Sommerfeld added four kills and senior Chase DuChateau 10 assists. "They're definitely a better team and their ball control is a lot better than ours at this point," Nash said. "We'd let them get on runs of five points here and five points there and we're battling to get back in the game. We'd get close again and we'd give up those couple of points. "Give it to East: They served tough."
