NOVEMBER 2013 Page 4B/Freeman Brookfield & Elm Grove PREP BOYS SOCCER Brookfield East 1, Brookfield Central 0 IN BRIEF Central basketball players Rohde, LaChance commit to colleges Spartans survive physical regional game with Central Early goal more than enough for East to advance By Evan Frank Freeman Correspondent BROOKFIELD – Rivalries are normally heated. Sometimes it can get a little physical, too. Brookfield East High School boys soccer coach Herbie Dundun expected that and more as the Spartans defeated Brookfield Central 1-0 in a WIAA Division 2 regional final. The intensity was seen from the start after an early East goal, but the two teams were so aggressive that several players were shaken up or even carried off the field by medical staff. "I expected it to be even more (physical) than this," Dundun said. "We love to dislike one another on the field, but generally we are in the same community and love one another. When we come and play, both sides, we may have a weak regular season, but when we play them it doesn't reflect our regular season. It goes for them, too." East finished second in the Greater Metro Conference, though the Spartans snapped Marquette's 59-match unbeaten streak to Wisconsin teams the previous week. Central took fourth in league play and lost to East 3-0 earlier in the season. But the records went out the window once again. "We knew going in this is a crosstown rivalry," East senior midfielder Michael Lesar said. "This is the biggest game, and this is the regional final." Junior midfielder Henry Raymonds dribbled near the right corner flag of Central and sent a cross into the penalty box. Lesar sprinted toward the goal post and scored the gamewinner with a header in midair at 7:29. "He got it out wide and dribbled baseline," Lesar said. "We practiced this all the time. When the guy goes baseline, we go near post. That's why I made my run and I just headed it in." Dundun believed the accuracy of the cross made the play succeed. "We were working on the crossings, good crossings, and guys from the middle attacking it," Dundun said. "I'm so glad they had the fresh legs. The timing was there, it was beautiful. I think it will fall in as one of the clinical goals of the season." Central threatened at the end of the first half off a free kick that was nearly booted in, but East junior goalkeeper Drew Johnson fended off the attack after a brief scare. "The one at the end of the first half was really nerve-racking for me because I mishandled the cross coming in," Johnson said. "I bobbled it and it came out. I just did everything I could possibly do: just get my body in the way, whether it be a leg or a chest." The Spartans cleared the shot, but it gave Johnson a wake-up call. "It was really scary for me," he said. "I should've held onto it and I should've dealt with the cross better than what I did." Central coach Jon Mroz implemented a shift in players after the early goal and said the change helped the Lancers. "The early goal certainly did put a dent in it," Mroz said of his team's initial plan. "I think it was a sign of something that we recognized. About 20 minutes in we did change some things tactically. We shifted some bodies around and that seemed to work in our favor at that point." BROOKFIELD – Brookfield Central High School senior Lydia Rohde committed to play Northwestern University last month. Rohde, a second-team All-Freeman selection as a junior, chose the Wildcats over schools such as Princeton, Bradley and American. "Lydia is a really smart kid and does really well in the classroom," Central coach Dan Wandrey said. "School took a precedence over simply picking a 'basketball school.'" Rohde, a 5-foot-10 guard, averaged 11.6 points per game in being selected first-team AllGreater Metro Conference. "She's got the size and the athleticism, where a lot of 5-10 girls in high school are playing inside. She can handle the ball and has great vision. She can handle, shoot, post up and has a midrange game. The combination of all those things really jumps out." Rohde's decision follows that of Riley LaChance, a star on the boys basketball team who selected Vanderbilt as his college of choice. Makal to coach Central girls soccer BROOKFIELD – Dan Makal has been hired as head girls soccer coach at Brookfield Central High School. Makal has 12 years of high school soccer coaching experience. He has served as Central's boys varsity assistant for the past eight years, and was head girls soccer coach at South Milwaukee High School from 2009 to 2012. Makal replaces Jason Burdge, who had been the head coach since 2008. Makal also has been involved with local club soccer programs for the past nine years. He played on a state championship team in high school (Wauwatosa East), played at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and played semipro soccer for the Milwaukee Rampage. "Dan has the soccer knowledge, playing experience and passion for high school athletics to continue to build on the long-standing tradition of success at BCHS in the girls soccer program," Central Athletic Director Todd Sobrilsky noted in a press release. "Dan really impressed the selection committee with his enthusiasm and excitement about the unique opportunity afforded high school athletes today Submitted photo Raney gets Hall of Fame honor BROOKFIELD – Catherine Raney was only 17 years old and a junior at Brookfield Academy when she made the Olympic speedskating team for the first time. The four-time Olympian and current American record holder in the women's 3,000 and 5,000 and 10,000 meters was inducted recently into Brookfield Academy's Athletic Hall of Fame. through educational-based athletics and the challenge of sustaining the program's historical level of success." Central has won four state titles since 2002 and 10 Greater Metro Conference titles since 1999.
