Poplar Street, Petersburg Millions of people — even religious peo- ple — are afraid of God and are struggling to earn His favor. They suppose that salva- tion is the reward of showing enough love to Him. If only they would believe what God Himself says, that if we are ever saved it will be entirely because He loved us and gra- ciously provided for our salvation. The Apostle Paul, in the Bible, called God "the God of love" (II Cor. 13:11) and John de- clared that "God IS love" (1 John 4:8). Thus John goes on to say: "Herein is love, not that we loved god, but that he loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation [satisfaction] for our sins" (1 John 4: 10). This is why salvation is so often called a "gift" in the Bible. It is the expression of God's love to sinners. And so St. Paul tells us: "[We] were by nature the children of wrath, even as others, but god, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved)" (Eph. 2:3-5). "…after that the kindness and love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have do- ne, but according to HIS MERCY He saved us…" (Tit. 3:4,5). Does all this mean that God overlooks sin or condones it? By no means! In His love He paid for our sins on Calvary's cross "that He might be Just, and the Justifier of him that believeth in Jesus" (Rom. 3:26). This is why we read in Rom. 5:8: "…God commendeth his love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us." This has been a busy week for me. Either I'm getting slower doing chores or they are multiplying each day. There is an old saying that learning to say "no"is difficult. I try to help when I can and that usually brings more opportunities to help someone else. Like it or not there are times you have to work at home or get hopelessly behind on your chores. Last Friday while mowing the church yard I slipped into a drainage ditch and had to pulled out by a good neighbor. If you use a zero turn mower be careful if they happen to lose traction they will slide. It is best to look over your yard for damp ground and stay alert when mowing there. All the yards in Velpen look real good as most of them are mowed about the same time each week. Velpen is a fairly clean little community and I'm proud to be able to what we do there at the church. I only wish we could get some of them to at- tend our services. Everyone is welcome at our services and we would love to worship with them. Last Saturday my wife and I tried our hand at flea marketing at the Riverside Park in Winslow. Being our first attempt we on- ly took a few items and actually sold a few things but I think we probably broke even be- cause we bought about as much as we sold. I must admit it was fun and the vendors are friendly and look out for one another. I can see that people who buy at flea markets look for bargains and odd things so anybody could have a table or two and get rid of lots of stuff if they are willing to sit and bargain with the The Church Page is made possible by the following Firms and Businesses: Amber Manor Care Center Petersburg — 812-354-3001 Benner & Co. If this is true, some might ask why are so many going to therapists, counseling, consulting divorce lawyers and taking opioids. Why do so ma- ny have a sense of emptiness? One thing we all agree on is people everywhere seek happiness. I visited Russia before the Iron Curtain came down and have made several trips to Russia since. The striking thing was not the shabby apartments, poverty of the people but the lack of happiness. There were few smiling faces and people appeared to be void of joy. They had been told for 70 years that there was no God. This lack of spiritu- ality left them empty and without an inner peace. When they accepted Christ as their personal Savior, their faces would light up and they would speak of inner joy. I read an article on the science of hap- piness. The article pointed out that laugh- ter and optimistic thoughts are good for your health and may help you to live longer. The Bi - ble says, "A cheer- ful heart does good like a medicine, but a broken spirit makes one sick." (Proverbs 17:22, TLB) I have observed for many years that those with a strong faith in God have a sense of peace, hope and joy. This inner joy does not come from earthly pleasures, material things or great wealth. Scientists know a lot about depression, fear, hopelessness and sadness. As they search for positive emotions and joy, they may dis- cover that faith is important and God can fill the emptiness in our lives.
