Researchers reveal social stress is associated with shortened lifespan in mice Indiana Researchers have dis- covered that animals who became dominant in a social relationship lived significantly longer than those who became subordinate. The study, in collaboration with the University of Minnesota, repre- sents the first rodent model assess- ing the impact of chronic stress on the lifespan of mice, cellular aging and diseases associated with ag- ing, such as atherosclerosis, or fat- ty deposits that can clog arteries. Stress and socio-economic sta- tus has long been connected to death and disease in humans, but the mechanisms behind these pro- cesses have not been understood or fully explored in animal models until now. "Our social environment, where we are in the dominance hierar- chy of life, whether we feel down- trodden or empowered seem to have powerful relations with obe- sity, metabolic health, aging and lifespan," said David Allison, dean and Provost Professor of the IU School of Public Health-Blooming- ton, who contributed to the study. "These research findings take us one step closer in understanding more about the socially influential aspects of stress on our health and longevity." The mice were studied in the lab- oratory of Alessandro Bartolomuc- ci of the University of Minnesota Medical School. Vectren to provide energy-efficient lighting to area food pantries for distribution Sixteen food pantries throughout Petersburg, Evansville, Chandler, Princeton, Mt. Vernon and New Har- mony are receiving 4-packs of LED bulbs from Vectren's energy efficien- cy program to distribute to patrons throughout the summer. Vectren is providing more than 50,000 bulbs to be given to those in the community who frequent the area's various food pantries. "Vectren is committed to assisting customers to conserve energy and save money," said Brad Ellsworth, president of Vectren Energy Delivery- South. "By providing LED bulbs to the food pantries, we are helping low-in- come families take simple, effective steps to lowering their energy costs." If all bulbs are installed replac- ing traditional 60 watt light bulbs as- suming three hrs/day of use, nearly 232,000 kWhs of energy consump- tion will be saved annually—enough to power 2,780 homes for a month or 230 homes annually.
