Poplar Street, Petersburg Montgomery, Stone receive ICGSA Softball Academic All-State recognition By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central High School seniors Jordan Montgomery and Audra Stone have been select- ed for Softball Academic All-State honors for 2018 by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association. In addition, seniors Jalah Barnes and Peyton Sorgi- us received Softball Aca- demic All-State honorable mention. A total of 98 Indiana high school seniors were chosen as Academic All- State, while 150 more were awarded honorable men- tion. The ICGSA Academic All-State team is a program where both academic and athletic prowess are con- sidered in the selections. Items such as grade point average, college board scores and academic class rank are considered along with athletic performance in areas such as points per game, rebounds per game and assists per game. IGSCA-member head coaches from schools across the state may nom- inate seniors who meet criteria that includes a 3.5 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale or equivalent, an SAT score of 1,100 on the crit- ical reading (verbal) and math sections or an mini- mum ACT composite score of 24. Area players who also re- ceived Academic All-State recognition were Lauren Earhart of Mount Ver- non (Posey); Haley Elp- ers of Evansville Mater Dei; Drew Harpenau of Gibson Southern; Kaitlin Kost of Tecumseh; Gabry- ella Lakes of Castle; Claire O'Reilly of Evansville Re- itz; Kirsten Pride of Te- cumseh; Mallory Sandul- lo of Evansville Central; Grace Werner of Jasper; and Sarah Yoder of North Daviess. The second-place finish earned the Chargers a berth in the regional tournament – which will be played on Thursday, June 7, at the Country Oaks Golf Club in Montgomery – for the first time since 1997. "Getting an individual to ad- vance is great, but it doesn't feel nearly as good as the whole team," Pike Central head coach Jarrod Gideon said. "It was their goal from the beginning of the year, so I'm proud of them." Junior Noah Onyett, who ad- vanced to the regional tourney as an individual last season, led the Chargers with an individual score of 80 – or 10 -over-par on the par-70 course – while senior Lincoln Vaughn, who also ad- vanced to the regional tourney as an individual last season, shot an 83. Junior Hayden Kabrick, mean- while, fired an 85 while junior Austin Holder and sophomore Jaylon Mills both shot an 87. It was the first time the Char- gers had all five of its players shoot scores of 87 or less during the sectional tournament since 2007, when Ethan Bennett (82), Tim Cochran (82), Cliff Parsons (83), Evan Bennett (86) and Jor- dan Roy (87) accomplished the feat. "I think what saved us today was just consistency," Gideon said. "No one shot higher than 87 and that really helped us out, because it allowed a little leeway. Most of the three, four and five guys on the other teams were taking a high score. We didn't have to do that." "We don't necessarily rely on one person going low and him holding up the others," agreed Onyett. "We're pretty steady throughout, from one through five. That's all that matters. Some teams have kids that shoot really low and then hold up the rest of the team, but we're just not like that." Onyett started off the day strong, making par on seven of the first eight holes and a birdie on No. 7 before a double bogey on No. 9 gave him a front-nine score of 36, or 1-over-par. Onyett bogeyed on two of the first three holes on the back nine to fall to 3-over-par, then carded an 8 on the par-3 No. 13 – a quin- tuple bogey – to drop to 8 -over- par. Onyett would finish his round with a bogey on No. 14, pars on No. 15, No. 16 and No. 17 and a PCHS LINKSTERS FINISH SECOND IN SECTIONAL TO EARN FIRST REGIONAL BERTH SINCE 1997 Pike Central High School junior Noah Onyett tees off during the boys' golf sectional tournament host- ed by Vincennes Lincoln at the Country Club of Old Vincennes on Friday, June 1. Haugh Track & Field Complex in Bloomington. A fter clearing the opening height of 12 feet, 6 inches on his second attempt, Kirby cleared the next three heights – 13 feet; 13 feet, 6 inches; and 14 feet – on his first tries. However, Kirby – who broke his own school record with a leap of 14 feet, 2 inch- es while placing third in the regional meet on Thursday, May 24, at Evansville Cen- tral – was eliminated from the competi- tion when he missed all three of his at- tempts at 14 feet, 6 inches. "He cleared 14'6" on his final attempt but hit the bar with his left arm and el- bow when he was throwing his pole back," said Chargers volunteer assistant coach Eric Knight. "It stinks that he missed it, but it was also an eye opener for him, knowing he can clear it." "He was so close," Pike Central head coach Chris Kramer added. Kirby and five other pole vaulters went out at 14 feet, 6 inches – leaving 11 re- maining in the competition – but Kirby was placed 12th due to the fact that he was the only one of the six to have suc- cessfully cleared the crossbar at 14 feet on his first attempt. Western Boone senior Solo Huckstep, Hobart freshman Riley Johnston and Her- itage Hills senior Jacob Luebbehusen – all of whom missed on their first try at 14 feet – finished in a three-way tie for 13th place while Goshen senior Lucas De Moya and Greenfield-Central junior Ad- am Lee – both of whom missed on their first two tries at 14 feet – tied for 16th. "Looking at the seeding going into the meet, there were a bunch of kids that were from 14' to 14'6", so the plan was to try to clear every height on his first at- tempt," Knight said. "That way, if it came down to a tie for placing, he would jump ahead because of no misses." "He missed one time at 12'6", but that was far enough back that it didn't matter," Knight continued. "Tyler clearing 13', 13'6" and 14' on his first attempt jumped him ahead of the others that also went out at 14'6"." Kirby came into the state finals as the 15th-highest seed in pole vault. Two higher seeds – Columbus North senior Brigham Kleinhenz at No. 9 and Carm- el senior Alex Audia at No. 12 – failed to clear the opening height, and Luebbehu- sen and Huckstep came into the compe- tition as No. 9 and No. 10 seeds, respec- tively. The only lower seeded competitor to finish ahead of Kirby was Portage senior Jacob Bondon. Bondon, who was seeded 17th, placed ninth in the state finals with a leap of 14 feet, 6 inches. Frankfort senior Colton Crum placed first in pole vault with a state record leap of 17 feet, 6 -1/4 inches, besting the previ- ous mark of 17 feet, 6 inches set by Bloom- ington South's Deakin Volz in 2015. "With the state meet being such a big meet, Tyler did a really good job of keep- ing his nerves in check and performing the way he did," Knight said. "There were a bunch of people there watching, and a bunch of kids competing. The weather was brutal – temps were high and there was no shade to hide under.
