VFW members were located at the intersection of Highway 61 and 57 in Petersburg. The VFW has sold the Buddy Poppys since Memorial Day 1922. The Buddy Poppy comes from the po- em In Flanders Field written by John McCrae about the poppys blowing through the cemeteries in Europe where hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers died in WWI. "In Flanders Fields the poppies blow, Be- tween the cresses, row on row, That mark our place." Originally the money raised from the sales went to help the displaced French, who were devastated by the German invasion. Now the sales go to help American veterans.
