Submitted Photo Sugar Ridge FWA to host Southern Indiana Outdoor Experience June 2 The Sugar Ridge Fish and Wildlife Area will host a Southern Indiana Out- door Experience on Satur- day, June 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature a wide variety of hands-on activities, including .22-ri- fle shooting; archery; a na- ture hike; fishing; kayak- ing; a fish touch tank; and a fish filleting and cooking demo. The event is taking place during the statewide Free Fishing Weekend, so no fishing licenses are re- quired. Lady Charger netters end season with 5-0 loss to Jasper The Pike Central High School girls' tennis team end- ed its season with a 5 -0 loss to Jasper in the first round of the sectional tournament on Wednesday, May 16, at Jasper. At No. 1 singles, Lady Char- gers senior Cass Conder lost to Lady Wildcats senior Sarah Monesmith 6 -0, 6 -0. At No. 2 singles, Lady Char- gers junior Meredith Benson lost to Lady Wildcats sopho- more Suchi Bandaru 6 -0, 6 -0. At No. 3 singles, Lady Chargers sophomore Shelby Vaughn lost to Lady Wildcats freshman Josie Yarbrough 6 - 0, 6 -0. At No. 1 doubles, the La- dy Chargers duo of junior Kirsten Jansen and sopho- more Audrey Keepes lost to Lady Wildcats seniors Car- oline Theil and Olivia Yar- brough 6 -0, 6 -3. At No. 2 doubles, the Lady Chargers team of senior Ja- dyn Ashby and junior Grace Smith lost to Lady Wildcats seniors Maggie Getzin and Aubrey Williams 6 -0, 6 -0. "Jasper is ranked No. 11 in the state for a reason – they are a solid program and a solid team," Pike Central head coach Brent Beck said. "Their kids liked to hit with pace and, unfortunately, that is something that we some- times struggle with." The Lady Chargers ended the season 4-12 overall and 2- 6 in the Pocket Athletic Con- ference. "As far as wins and losses go, it's certainly not where I hoped we would be, but we have made huge strides over the last couple of years and we're going to keep go- ing right through the sum- mer," Beck said. "This year, we competed more regular- ly. Next year, it will be about competing and winning on a regular basis. The opportuni- ties will be there to get better. We just have to get everyone to take advantage and buy in." Lady Chargers post wins over Northeast Dubois and South Knox Senior first baseman Demi Croak and senior catcher Lexi Halbrader collected four hits each to lead the Pike Central High School softball team to an 11-2 victory over host Northeast Dubois on Thurs- day, May 17. Trailing 2-0 after Lady Jeeps sophomore first base- man Macie Brinkman belt- ed a two-run double with two outs in the first inning, Pike Central tied the score at 2- 2 on a two-run single by se- nior leftfielder Jordan Mont- gomery with one out in the second, then took a 3-2 lead when sophomore centerfield- er Lauren Vaughn scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the third. Run-scoring singles by se- nior pitcher Peyton Sorgi- us and Croak highlighted a three-run fourth inning that extended the Lady Chargers' lead to 6 -2. Pike Central capped off the victory with a five-run seventh inning highlighted by a three-run double by se- nior shortstop Audra Stone – the Lady Chargers' only ex- tra-base hit of the game. Vaughn and junior second baseman Emily Carnahan both went 2-for-4 and scored two runs. Montgomery was 2-for-4 while scoring one run and driving in two. Senior third baseman Jalah Barnes had two hits in four at-bats, scored one run and drove in one. Sorgius pitched all sev- en innings for Pike Central, allowing two runs – both of which were earned – on four hits while walking one and striking out seven. Sorgius, who delivered first-pitch strikes to 19 of the 27 batters she faced, threw 79 pitches, including 58 for strikes. Senior third baseman Clare Mangin led Northeast Dubois with two hits in three at-bats. The Lady Chargers raked Lady Jeeps junior pitcher Camryn Stemle for 11 runs – eight of which were earned – on 17 hits. Stemle walked none and struck out one. Mangin pitched two in- nings for Northeast Dubois, giving up no runs on one hit. With the win, Pike Central improved to 12-8 while North- east Dubois fell to 14-7. In the junior varsity con- test, freshman designated hit- ter Riley Morgan went 2-for-4 while scoring one run and driving in four to lead the La- dy Chargers to a 15 -3 victory over Northeast Dubois. Junior pitcher Alizé Padgett had three hits in four at-bats – including a double – while scoring two runs and driving in two. Also collecting two hits each for Pike Central were sophomore catcher Aubrie Dawson, freshman second baseman Kenzie Powell and freshman third baseman Mal- lory Hickey. Powell, who also drew one walk, and Hickey both scored three runs. Padgett went the distance for the Lady Chargers, allow- ing three runs – all of which were earned – on five hits while walking two and strik- ing out two. With the win, the Pike Cen- tral junior varsity team end- ed its season with a record of 9 -3-1. Pike Central 7, South Knox 4 Junior Hannah Carnahan ent 2-for-3 while scoring run and driving in two as Pike Central defeated visiting South Knox 7-4 on Wednes- day, May 16. A fter a run-scoring dou- ble by senior first baseman Demi Croak gave the Lady Chargers a 1-0 lead with one out in the first inning, a sacri- fice fly by Hannah Carnahan and a sacrifice bunt by senior left fielder Jordan Montgom- ery plated two more runs in the second inning to extend Pike Central's lead to 3-0. South Knox closed to with- in 3-2 with a two-run third in- ning, scoring one run on a sacrifice fly by pitcher Gracie Keller and the other on a dou- ble by second baseman Madi- son Johnson. However, after senior pitch- er Peyton Sorgius led off the bottom of the third inning with a home run to give Pike Central a 4-2 lead, the Lady Chargers plated one run in the fourth inning – on an RBI single by senior shortstop Au- dra Stone – and two more in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 7-2. The Lady Spartans scored one run in the sixth inning on a double by first baseman Ji- anna Hughes and another in the seventh inning on a sin- gle by catcher Kyndall Elliott to close to within 7-4. However, with runners on first and second with two out, Pike Central junior pitcher Al- izé Padgett got Johnson to hit a pop fly to Lady Charger se- nior third baseman Jalah Barnes to end the game. Sorgius picked up the win, allowing two runs – neither of which were earned – on four hits while striking out six. Padgett hurled the final two innings, allowing two runs – both of which were earned – on five hits while striking out one. In the junior varsity con- test, Pike Central freshman pitcher Kenzie Powell pitched a no-hit shutout in a 6 -0 victo- ry over South Knox. Powell retired the first 13 batters she faced – including four on strikeouts – before Lady Spartans catcher Hallie Kirk reached base on an er- ror with two outs in the fifth inning. Sophomore catcher Aubrie Dawson went 2-for-3 while driving in one run for the La- dy Chargers. Freshman des- ignated hitter Riley Morgan went 1-for-3 with a double, scored one run and drove in two. Jianna Hughes took the loss for South Knox, allow- ing six runs – two of which were earned – on five hits while walking two and strik- ing out four. • The Lady Chargers were scheduled to open the sec- tional tournament at Pike Central on Monday, May 21, against Vincennes Lin- coln, but the game was post- poned to Tuesday, May 22, because of inclement weath- er. PCMS softball team closes season with wins over South Knox, Barr-Reeve The Pike Central Mid- dle School softball team closed out its season with back-to-back home victo- ries over South Knox on Tuesday, May 15, and Barr-Reeve on Thursday, May 17. Pike Central 3, South Knox 0 The Lady Chargers scored their runs off three hits – a double by seventh grader Delaney Welch and singles by sev- enth graders Chloe Wil- liams and Chloe Willis and eighth grader Sophie Carnahan. Carnahan got the win, throwing three shut-out innings while allowing three hits and striking out two. Williams hurled the final two innings to get the save, allowing one hit while striking out five. With the win, Pike Cen- tral improved to 11-2. In the B game, the Lady Chargers won 12-1, scor- ing their runs off seven hits and six walks. Sixth graders Brailey Mills and Lexie Onyett both collect- ed two singles while sixth grader Jaidyn Gogel and seventh graders Nevaeh Lemond and Alyna Sharp had one single each. On- yett pitched and got the complete-game victory. With the win, the Pike Central B team improved to 13-0. Pike Central 1, Barr-Reeve 0 The Lady Chargers had four hits – two singles by eighth grader Mallory Hunt and one single each by eighth grader Hallie Bailey and seventh grad- er Chloe Williams. Williams pitched the first three innings to pick up the win, allowing two hits and striking out six. Eighth grader Brynn Hill- yard hurled the final two innings, allowing one hit and striking out one to get the save. With the win, Pike Cen- tral ended the season 12- 2. In the B game, the Lady Chargers took their first loss of the season 11-1. Pike Central had three hits – a double by seventh grader Alyna Sharp and singles by sixth graders Haylie Fulcher and Brai- ley Mills. Sixth grader Lexie On- yett took the loss, pitch- ing the first four innings while allowing four runs – all earned – on three hits while striking out two. Sixth grader Karley Ka- vanaugh hurled the final inning, allowing seven runs – five of which were earned – on four hits. With the loss, the Pike Central B team ended the season 13-1. NEWS!
