What are the great principles that can be extracted from the Ten Com- mandments in the Hebrew Bible? Reverence for the Lord, reverence for family, reverence for the sanctity of life, reverence for private property and personal responsibility, and a pro- hibition of envy. Some surely will say that the United States has strayed so far from these principles that they no longer define the country. But I travel constantly. I have been in every state of the union. And I have met enough of the many millions of Americans that still subscribe to these truths to know they are still very much alive in America. And I also believe that the problems that plagued America in the past, and that plague America today, trace to abandonment of these great truths — these great truths rooted in the He- brew Bible. I see President Trump's coura- geous step forward to lead the Unit- ed States to be the first nation in the world to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel, and to move the United States Embassy to Jerusalem, as implicit recognition that the common ground on which both nations stand is our shared be- lief in these great and holy truths. The achievements of the young State of Israel, which celebrates its 70th birthday this year, have been truly awesome. Writer, social philosopher and in- vestor George Gilder wrote a book called "The Israel Test." What is the Israel Test according to Gilder? He asks the question: How do you react to those who excel you in inno- vation, in creativity, in wealth? Do you envy them and feel diminished by them? Or do you admire what they have achieved and try to emu- late them? Those who say the latter pass the Israel Test. According to Gilder, it is the Israel Test that drives today's ten- sions in the Middle East. I would take it a step further and say that it is the Israel Test that drives the tensions in America. Gilder says that those who pass the Israel Test tend to become wealthy and peaceful. Those who fail it tend to become poor and violent. The great principles that join Amer- ica and Israel are equally true and cru- cial for all of mankind. Congratulations to President Trump for helping America pass the Israel Test. Now we wait for the other nations of the world. Star Parker is an author and pres- ident of CURE, Center for Urban Re- newal and Education. Contact her at www.urbancure.org. Continued from page 10 ISREAL TEST Continued from 10 TOMATOES Two things I came across on a side research, I learned that bread can be frozen to prevent mold from form- ing, and that cheese should not be wrapped in plastic when storing in the fridge, but rather use cheese bag or cheese paper as they are the best materials to use for storage. • • • To all those who continue to support Somebody's Place- people and church- es and organizations who give mon- ey, food, clothes, toiletries, applianc- es, and many other useful items, we extend our gratitude for your gener- osity. We cannot thank you enough. • • • Humor of the week: How to prepare the tomato garden. An elderly gentleman lived alone in his house. He wanted to plant his an- nual tomato garden, but it was very difficult work, as the ground was hard. His only son who used to help him was in prison. The old man wrote a let- ter to his son and described his pre- dicament. "Dear son, I am feeling pretty sad because it looks like I won't be able to plant my tomato garden this year. I'm just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. I know if you were here, my troubles would be over. I know you would be happy to dig the plot for me, like the good old days, Love Papa." The son responded to his letter, knowing that all letters are screened by the prison officials. The son said," Dear Papa, Don't dig up that gar- den! That's where I buried all the sto- len money I got from the bank. Love, your son." At 4 am the next morning, the FBI and law enforcement officials arrived and dug up the entire backyard with- out finding any of the money the son was telling his father. They apologized to the old man and left. The next day, the old man received another letter from his son. "Dear Papa, Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That's the best I could do under the circumstances. Love you. Your son." Have a great week! er had time for." What is one to think? James, answers the ques- tion "What is your life? " "Now listen, you who say, Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on busi- ness and make money. Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. In- stead, you ought to say, if it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that. As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil." Notice the rebuke given to those who act presump- tuously suggesting that the Lord has no purpose in his/ her life. Life has meaning. Life glo- rifies God, and God glorifies life. The only question that remains is what type of glo- ry will each of us receive? A glory of honor or an infa- mous glory of shame? Each of us must decide. Think about it! POOH LIFE Continued from page 10 Continued from page 10 even though we don't and can't fully understand the problem. But what we can do, what will actually help, is love. Listening and being kind speaks volumes of comfort- ing words to a struggling friend we could never say with our mouths. We don't always need to understand; we do always need to love. See how easy giving pithy advice is? Have a great week!
