According to a media release, the folk singer has been exploring the nation's historic past, "drawn by the daily life and hardships of American pioneers." These pioneers are featured in a series of songs of the Gibson's new album "American Dreams." Greg Jackson of Upstate Live said, "It's almost as if Cosby composes from another time, simpler, more honest, more concise, without frivolous self-importance." Created by Fred Dankert, the musical focuses on 13-year-old Eugenia Standish, living in New York City in the 1950s with her wealthy grandmother and a houseful of servants. Eugenia has no friends in her sheltered life except her last doll, Tilly, who magically comes to life on Christmas Even and transforms into a real girl. Willie Nelson's "Hero" is about him. Shaver has recorded more than 20 albums, and his songs have been recorded by Elvis Presley, Dylan and Johnny Cash. A media release said, "Analog synthesizers and heavy bass notes fill the electronic role, while big guitars create space for shredding within the structure of pure indie rock." Bruce has played Elvis in music videos with Faith Hill and Sheryl Crow, "Elvis at 21" as part of the Elvis exhibit at the Smithsonian, with Elvis' original backup singers the Jordanaires, as well as at Disneyland in "Legends of Rock & Roll — Buddy, Roy & Elvis." The band has performed with the Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Toronto Symphony and many others. The group will be joined by special guest Elizabeth Von Trapp, granddaugher of Maria and Baron von Trapp of "Sound of Music" fame. Mon. 12/31 First Night Oneonta 4 p.m. Downtown Oneonta venues www.firstnightoneonta.com This annual family friendly event begins with a parade, followed by performances by the Catskill Symphony Orchestra, Samurai Pizza Cats, Horseshoe Lounge Playboys, Sophie Gault Band, Driftwood, Balloons on Main Street, John Scarpulla, Hop City Hellcats and more. Fireworks end the night at 10:15 p.m.
