The final month of the year. And, according to those pesky Mayans and Doomsday Preppers, the end of civilization as we know it Dec. 22. Get more thoughtful insights about the alleged impending apocalypse in Kevin Eggleston's column this month on Page 17. While some may spend this month partying like there's literally no tomorrow, I tend to take a more pop culture view. That's how I normally look at the world anyway. Here are a few things this month of holidays makes me think about. Movies! Movies! Movies! Specifically holiday ones, which seem to permeate basic cable networks, big-box store displays and many a memory in my mind. My favorite: "A Christmas Story." This 1980s classic combines shots of Cleveland — there's actually a museum set up there now where they filmed parts of the family's house a short drive from where I grew up — bright pink bunny pajamas, the Old Man (who reminds me of my own dad in so many ways), crude humor for all ages and triple-dog dares. It really comes down to one word for me: Fragile. Some of other favorites include "The Muppet Christmas Carol," "Elf," "Home Alone," "It's a Wonderful Life," "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," "Mickey's Christmas Carol" and "Die Hard" (not just a great holiday movie, but an entertaining movie for the whole year). The classic TV specials. Perhaps one of the best experiences from my high school theater days was getting to play Snoopy in a production of "A Charlie Brown Christmas." No lines, but I got to do the Peanuts dance, and make animal noises and silly faces at everyone the whole time. Some other specials I remember loving were, of course, the combo of "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer," "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," and "Frosty the Snowman"; "A Chipmunk Christmas," during which Alvin gets a shiny, gold harmonica and sings "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)"; "A Muppet Family Christmas"; and "Christmas Eve on Sesame Street." The music. Not much to say here that hasn't been said. "Sleigh Bells." "Silent Night." "O Holy Night." "Happy Xmas (War Is Over). That Mariah Carey song. For those wishing to hear the elves' side of the story of Christmas, check out Barenaked Ladies' "Elf's Lament" with Michael Buble. Good stuff.
