B-2 Sports Wednesday, May 2, 2018 The Press-Dispatch "When I looked up there on the scoreboard, we were attacking every inning," Pike Central head coach Rick Weisman said. "We were all still attacking the ball at the plate, and that's what I real- ly like. Everybody's got a job to do, and they're doing it." The Lady Chargers scored one run in the first inning on an infield single by senior third baseman Jalah Barnes, one run in the second in- ning when senior shortstop Audra Stone was hit with a pitch with the bases loaded, and one run in the third in- ning on Johnson's home run to right-center field to take a 3-1 lead. Vincennes Lincoln (10 -6), which scored its first run in the second inning on a home run by senior third baseman Hayden Brown, vaulted in- to the lead – at 5 -3 – when senior right fielder Kaylee Lange belted a grand slam with one out in the top of the fourth inning. However, Pike Central would score six runs in the bottom of the fourth and add six more in the home half of the fifth inning to end the contest. Junior second baseman Emily Carnahan led off the fourth with a single, ad- vanced to third on a single by senior centerfielder Shelbi Pipes, then scored on a sin- gle by Stone to cut the Lady Alices' lead to 5 -4. A fter senior left fielder Jordan Montgomery reached on a bunt single, senior first baseman Demi Croak drew a bases-loaded walk, forcing Pipes home to tie the score at 5 -5. One out later, senior des- ignated player Peyton Sorgi- us and Johnson drew back- to-back bases-loaded walks – scoring both Montgom- ery and Croak – to give Pike Central a 7-5 lead. The Lady Chargers ex- tended their lead to 8 -5 on a fielder's choice grounder by sophomore right fielder Lauren Vaughn that scored Barnes. Emily Carnahan followed with a single to center field that scored Sorgius – giving Pike Central a 9 -5 lead – be- fore Pipes took a called third strike to end the inning. Vincennes Lincoln tried to battle back in the top of the sixth inning, when Brown drew a one-out walk and ad- vanced to second base on a single by senior shortstop Allie DeHosse. However, the Lady Char- gers ended the threat when Montgomery caught a fly ball hit by sophomore pitch- er Darrian Carmean, then fired the ball to Carnahan to pick off Brown before she could get back to second base. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Montgomery drew a one-out walk advanced to third on a single by Croak and scored on a sacrifice fly by Barnes, extending Pike Central's lead to 10 -5. Croak subsequently cir- cled the bases and scored when Sorgius belted a dou- ble, giving the Lady Char- gers an 11-5 lead. Johnson followed with a single to drive in Sorgi- us and, after advancing to second base on an error by Vincennes Lincoln se- nior left fielder Peyton Siev- ers, scored on a single by Vaughn, extending Pike Central's lead to 13-5. Emily Carnahan followed with a fly ball that sopho- more centerfielder Karlie Myers dropped for an error, allowing Vaughn to score. A fter back-to-back walks to Pipes and Stone loaded the bases, Montgomery hit a grounder that DeHosse booted for an error as Car- nahan crossed the plate with the game-ending run. Sophomore pitcher Alizé Padgett picked up the com- plete-game win for the Lady Chargers, allowing five runs – all of which were earned – on eight hits while walking three and striking out two. "We wanted to get Alizé in here to face some pretty stiff competition because we knew the sectional was com- ing up," Weisman said. "We wanted her to get her feet wet instead of just throwing her in a sectional game, and then expect her to do that." "I think she learned a lot," Weisman added. "She grew up a lot tonight." Weisman noted that the Lady Chargers had learned the previous evening that they will open the section- al tournament – which will be hosted at Pike Central – against Vincennes Lincoln on Monday, May 21. "It's kind of ironic, that they drew last night and then, 24 hours later, we're playing them, and three weeks from now, we're going to suit up, in the same dugouts, and go again," Weisman said. "It'll be a big game, a good atmo- sphere. ( Vincennes Lincoln head coach Chaz Hendrix) will get on them and cor- rect some things. We've got to come with the same atti- tude." It will be the second time in three years that Pike Cen- tral will host the sectional tournament. Two years ago, the Lady Chargers lost to Jasper 3-1 in the champion- ship game. "We come ready to play, with a clear head, I think good things are going to hap- pen," Weisman said. "We've been hitting the ball a ton, and it's all up and down the lineup. So I've got to feel good about that." Pike Central 17, Southridge 0 Senior third baseman Jalah Barnes went 4-for-4, scored three runs and drove in five to lead the Lady Char- gers past visiting Southridge on Thursday, April 26. Barnes had run-scoring singles in the first and sec- ond innings, belted a two- run double in the third in- ning and a one-run double in the fourth inning. In the junior varsity game, junior first baseman Hannah Carnahan went 2-for-3 with a double and drove in two runs as Pike Central battled Southridge to a 5 -5 tie. Sophomore Alizé Padgett started and pitched three innings, allowing five runs – four of which were earned – on eight hits while walking one and striking out three.
