"But we swam really well," Bohnert added. "We beat ev - erybody that was in the same boat with us, on the age- group part, so we swam well. But Southridge and Tell City are made up mostly of year- round swimmers." Bohnert said that he was particularly pleased with the fact that the Lady Chargers posted 13 season-best times during the PAC Meet. "As far as our times, our girls did really well, swam good races and good solid races, and cut time," Bohnert said. "They cut a lot of time throughout the meet, too. We were pretty happy with how they performed for the night." the log, a small discolor- ation, etc., and then hold your eye on the spot all the way through your swing. To do this, you must maintain control of your swing to en- sure you connect with the spot at the end. You should start with your hands apart on the handle, bringing the maul up high into the air di- rectly over your head and then bring your hands to- gether just before the blow. With these things in mind, I take my first try. I connect with the strik- ing pad and send the ball up top, where it makes a healthy connection with the bell. When I take my next swing, I hit the pad harder, making the bell ring a little louder. On the third blow, the pressure of not messing up gets to me but I swing through and the bell tolls for a third time. I take a step back and look at the Carney as if to say, 'now what? ' He dully replies, "you can pick any prize." The tone and vol- ume of his voice has lost all of its former enthusiasm now that he has my money in his pouch. I look to where our group stands and see that my youngest daughter, Es- ther, is the only one of the kids that is still interested in Daddy's display of man- liness and power. "Come on, girl, pick out a prize," I call to her. She approach- es the inflatable toys and looks carefully at the over- sized baseball bats, gigan- tic hands and mallets. A pink "super bat" catch- es her eye and she grabs it with a quick glance at me for reassurance. "All right, good one," I say as she tucks the bat firmly under her arm like the way a man tucks a newspaper under his arm after buying it from a metal pay box. It's hers, and you'll have to be pret- ty big (bigger than her two siblings) and pretty scary (they aren't scary only ir- ritating) to take it from her. As we walk through the carnival and along the busy streets of the town, she clings to the pink bat with- out fail. Her Uncle sneaks up from behind and gives it a pull. She nits her brow and gives him the"scowly" face before he lets go and laughs at the determina- tion of a three-year-old pro- tecting her prize. I study the children. They look at the rides and the lights and the crowds and observe them in their own way. I wonder which of the things they see to- night will stick the longest in their minds. When they are all grown up, which memory of this trip to Flor- ida will they recall? Which will be their favorite? For me, it's easy. It's the sight of my little one walk- ing in the warm night un- der the neon lights of a Fer- ris wheel, her light golden hair rustled softly by the breeze. She's wearing a pair of blue shorts and a pink mermaid shirt as her little legs move her rap- idly forward through the crowd. And all the while, the pink inflatable bat that Daddy won is clutched tightly under one arm.
