B-6 Sports Wednesday, Februar y 14, 2018 The Press-Dispatch Wesleyan was a big day for both the program, and for he and his wife as parents. "We want to see our kids succeed and have success on and off of the field, as a team," Chad Western said. "If we can get kids to individ- ually take big steps like this, we're very proud of that." "But, definitely, as a dad, you want to see your kids succeed and strive for big goals, and I think that's what he's always done," Chad Western added. "This is just another big step in the process that we're all excit- ed about." Kyson Western was named the Pocket Athletic Conference's Player of the Year in 2017 after scoring a total of 32 goals – falling just one short of the school record 33 goals scored by Colton White in 2016 – and dishing out 22 assists as the Chargers went 15 -3-1, in- cluding a perfect 7-0 in the PAC to win their first-ever conference title. During his four-year high school career, Kyson West- ern scored a total of 87 goals – ranking second all-time in the PAC behind Gibson Southern's Hunter Deweese, who scored 101 goals – while setting PAC career records for most assists (76) and points (250). Kyson Western, who was named to the Indiana Soc- cer Coaches Association's All-District boys' soccer team for District 4, also re- ceived honorable mention All-State accolades during the ISCA's annual awards banquet on Nov. 19 at the Ritz Charles in Carmel. As a sophomore, when the Chargers went 15 -2-2, including 5 -1 in the PAC – Kyson Western scored 33 goals and dished out 27 as- sists to help lead Pike Cen- tral to its first-ever boys' soccer sectional title when it defeated Washington 1-0 on a goal by Kyson Western with 2:24 left in the first sev- en-minute overtime period of the championship match. The Panthers, who com- pete at the NCA A Division II level in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, went 1- 13-1 – including 1-12-1 in the G-MAC – last season, the fifth under head coach John Fusco. Kyson Western said that he, Evansville Mater Dei goalie Lucas Daunhauer and Evansville Bosse midfielder Elijah Easterday are among the program's six-member incoming freshmen class. "I know some of the in- coming freshmen," he said. "I've played travel with some, and I just know some from hearing about them scoring goals and hearing how good their team is. So we've got six incoming freshmen, and I think our coach is looking to make us all play from the beginning, so we can, hope- fully, get some wins in the conference ... and then, lat- er on, in a couple of years, maybe, compete for the con- ference." Kyson Western said that he had narrowed down his choices to just a handful be- fore deciding to sign with Kentucky Wesleyan. "Oakland City, just be- cause they're close, and they're at a good level," he said. "And USI (University of Southern Indiana). They're Division II. My brother goes to school there, so I'm famil- iar with the school and the campus. And then we talk- ed to Northern Kentucky, which is close to Cincinna- ti, and then the Universi- ty of Indianapolis, which is a good school. I took a visit there (and) went to a camp." "We've worked through this for probably the last 13, 14 months, and we've talk- ed to a lot of coaches, a lot of programs," Chad West- ern said. "It's been a deal where we whittled it down to a lesser and lesser amount of school, and then, at the end, everything was pointing this direction." Chad Western said that he and Kyson had already been talking to Kentucky Wesley- an's coaches – by phone and by e-mail – when Kyson's travel team played the Pan- thers last summer. "I think we lost 2-1 but he put a goal away against them," Chad Western re- called. "And then we got a direct invite to a camp and workouts that they had in the summer, so we did that. And he played really well and looked good. Since then ... we've talked quite a bit." Chad Western added that Kentucky Wesleyan Col- WESTERN Continued from page 1 PAC Continued from page 1 COMMERCIAL LEAGUE BOWLING RESULTS At King Pin Bowling Center, Washington TEAM STANDINGS (Through Wednesday, February 7) Points Points Year-to-Date Year-to-Date Scratch Pins + Team Name Won Lost Won Lost Pins Handicap King Pin 48 24 118 90 72205 84217 Washington Warriors 48 24 150 58 73252 83908 Balled 46 26 125 81 67083 83631 No. 423 Smokehouse 44 28 120 88 72596 84404 German American Bank 42 30 120 88 60157 82159 Misfits 40 32 109 99 70044 84069 Anthis Heating & Air 40 32 112 96 69962 83285 Hands Termite & Pest Control 38 34 116 92 73867 83155 Water Department 38 34 90 118 66210 82569 Daviess County Tire 38 34 112 96 62303 82568 A & R Home Center 36 36 111 99 64998 82632 The Tux 36 36 87 125 55979 81477 Crips 25 47 95 113 59593 82234 Pocket Pounders 25 47 89 119 58189 81367 Buckeyes 24 48 82 126 56953 81175 RESULTS OF WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7 Hdcp. "I'm pretty happy that it's not three or four hours or more, so that's nice," he said. "We had a great visit there and their coaches were all about him and the class com- ing in, so we're excited with the recruiting class." Kyson Western said that he is currently undecided as to what his major will be. "I was thinking physical therapy's an option," he said. "Being a teacher's an option. I'm not really sure yet. But I think I want to coach soccer and basketball." According to Kyson West- ern, being able to continue to play soccer at the collegiate level means a lot. "Pike Central's known for not really winning a lot, but I've been blessed to have a great class and great class- es above me and behind me, just all around me," he said. "Once you get that sectional and you get that trophy, you don't want to stop. So after that loss this year, against Washington, I didn't real- ly want it to be over yet. So, hopefully, we can do some- thing in college." When it was pointed out that he and Kentucky Wes- leyan shared the same ini- tials, Kyson smiled. "They use a hashtag, like, K-dub, and some peo- ple have actually called me that," he said. "So that's kind of a coincidence. That's kind of cool." That's why I think we got three on there, because they respect- ed how hard that we played. They may have beat us, but they had to earn it." Croak averaged 6.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game during the regu- lar-season. Against PAC op- ponents, Croak averaged 7.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. "She was our go-to ball- handler," McCutchan said of Croak, who led Pike Central in assists and three-pointers made. "She's strong with the ball. It's hard to take it from her. And she was our best shooter. When she's hitting three-pointers, we're just that much better of a team." "All three of these kids, they led us in something, so that's why I'm very hap- py that they got the recog- nition from their conference opponents that they did," McCutchan added. "They all brought something differ- ent to the table, and I'm glad they got recognized for it." Also receiving honorable mention were Southridge ju- nior Mady Neukam, North Posey sophomore Haley Wil- son, Heritage Hills senior Kerragan Mulzer, Tecum- seh sophomore Chloe Hold- er, South Spencer junior Averi Myers, South Spen- cer senior Emily Kaufman and Forest Park sophomore Faith Zazzetti.
