"But he shot the ball very well tonight." Senior Mekhi Lairy hit five three-point shots – out of eight attempts – while adding 22 points for the Bull- dogs, who improved to 7-0. As a team, Evansville Bosse made 18 of 28 tries from beyond the three-point arc – a 64.3 percent average. – and hit 18 of 29 shots from two-point range – a 62.1 per- cent average – while going 7-for-8 from the free throw line. "The plan was to make them shoot from outside," said Elliott, whose team slipped to 2-3. "Clearly, they proved us wrong there." "When they shoot the ball that well, they're pret- ty tough to defend," Elliott added. The Bulldogs opened the game with back-to-back three-pointers by Lairy and senior guard Jaylin Chinn before Pike Central se- nior forward Bryant Nalley scored to narrow the deficit to 6 -2 with five minutes left in the first quarter. Following an exchange of three-pointers by Coo- per for Evansville Bosse and senior Breyton Book- er for Pike Central, back-to- back threes by senior guard D'Angelo Ware and Cooper extended the Bulldogs' lead to 15 -5 with 3:22 left in the opening period. Pike Central, which turned the ball over on three of its first five posses- sions of the game, twice cut the deficit to eight points – at 15 -7 on a basket by Nal- ley and at 17-9 on a basket by junior guard Christian Ben- son – before a three-pointer by Cooper stretched Evans- ville Bosse's lead to 20 -9 with 2:23 remaining in the first quarter. The Chargers would pull to within nine points twice – at 20 -11 on a basket by Nal- ley and at 22-13 on a basket by senior forward Cameron Henson – but a three-pointer by senior guard Jaylen Mi- nor gave the Bulldogs a 25 - 13 lead heading into the sec- ond period. During the second peri- od, Evansville Bosse – af- ter hitting seven of 11 tries from beyond the three-point arc during the first quarter – made just one of six three- point attempts but still out- scored the Chargers 20 -15 to take a 45 -28 halftime lead. A fter a basket by Nalley at the start of the second half pulled Pike Central to within 45 -30, the Bulldogs scored seven straight points – on a basket by Ware, two free throws by Lairy and a three- point play by Lairy – to ex- tend their lead to 52-30 with 5:59 left in the third period. The Chargers respond- ed with a 7-0 scoring run of their own – on a three- point play and back-to- back baskets by Nalley – to close to within 52-37 be- fore a three-pointer by Lairy sparked an 11-1 scoring spree that stretched Evans- ville Bosse's lead to 63-38 with 1:30 remaining in the third quarter. A basket by senior Kaleb Claridge pulled Pike Cen- tral to within 63-40, but the Bulldogs answered with a 10 -0 scoring run – on two three-pointers by Cooper, one trey by Lairy and a free throw by Ware – to extend the lead to 73-40 with 6:28 left in the game. The Chargers would get no closer than 29 points the rest of the contest. "They're very good," Elliott said of Evansville Bosse, which came into the contest ranked No. 2 in Class 3A. "They're one of the best teams in the state. There's no secret about that. I don't think they're 41 points bet- ter than us. They might have been tonight." "But we've got to bounce back," Elliott added. "It's a long season. We can't get too high or too low. We can't put all of our stock into this one game." Nalley paced Pike Cen- tral with 26 points, hitting 10 of 18 field goal attempts – including one from three- point range – and making five of six tries from the free throw line, leaving him 67 points shy of becoming on- ly the third member of the program's 1,000 -point club. Claridge added seven points and dished out three assists while junior forward Nick Hillyard came off the bench to toss in six points. Henson grabbed a team- high six rebounds while Nalley had five. Henson al- so had two steals. For the game, Pike Cen- tral made 22 of 47 field goal attempts – a 46.8 percent average – and hit nine of 12 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 19 times. Chinn added 15 points for Evansville Bosse while Ware chipped in with eight points. Ware and senior guard Clyde Tsianguebe- ni grabbed five rebounds each while Lairy dished out a game-high four assists. Lairy and junior guard/for- ward Javen Layne had three steals each. For the game, Evansville Bosse made 36 of 57 field goal attempts – a 63.2 per- cent average – and hit seven of eight tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over nine times. "We gave them a few too many good looks," Elliott said. "We didn't necessari- ly have our hands up and we weren't closing out the way we should have been. We weren't talking defensively and competing the way that we have to." "But, give them cred- it, they did shoot the ball well," Elliott added. "But as far as being 41 points better than us – I think if we played them again, we'd give them a heck of a lot better game." The Chargers will take on Fort Wayne Blackhawk in the opening round of the Graber Post Buildings Tour- nament at North Daviess on Wednesday, Dec. 27, with tip- off scheduled for 4:30 p.m. The Braves are currently 5 -1 and are ranked No. 8 in Class 1A. "I've had a chance to look at them a little bit, and I know they've got a lot of size, and they're playing pretty well as well," Elliott said. "We're going to have to come out ready to play."
