The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, December 20, 2017 B- 5 before Pike Central rallied, scoring eight unanswered points – five by Hendrixson, two by Nalley and one by se- nior Halley Powers – to pull to within 54-40 with 5:04 re- maining in the fourth period. However, with Gibson Southern holding a 56 -42 lead, the Lady Titans scored seven straight points to ex- tend their lead to 63-42 with 3:05 left. A three-point play and a basket by Hendrixson – off of an assist from Nalley – ended the scoring. "We played with our backs to the wall," McCutchan said. "I just challenged us to com- pete. I told them it was a per- sonal pride thing – do you want to let them just blow you out, or do you want to battle and compete? Some of our kids did well. Some of them really didn't step up to the challenge tonight, and that's my job as the coach, to get them to play at a high level, play mentally tough and fo- cused." "I thought we lost focus tonight, and that's on me," McCutchan added. "That's something we've got to get better at. We play hard, but we don't always play smart and we don't always play fo- cused, and that's something that I have to do a better job getting them to play." For the game, Croak tal- lied seven points for the La- dy Chargers while sopho- more Jayln Nelson and Pow- ers added two points and one point, respectively. Hendrixson also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds while senior Audra Stone dished out three assists. As a team, Pike Central made 15 of 33 field goal at- tempts – a 45.5 percent av- erage – and hit 15 of 21 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 17 times. Klem and Raley paced Gib- son Southern (8 -2 overall, 2- 0 in the PAC) with 14 points each. Senior Skylar Boes add- ed eight points while Miller tossed in seven points. Raley also grabbed a team- high seven rebounds while Boes led the Lady Titans in assists (5) and steals (3). Miller also dished out four assists. As a team, Gibson South- ern made 25 of 43 field goal attempts – a 58.1 percent av- erage – and hit seven of 14 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over nine times. "I'll tip my hat – they were a very nice team," McCutchan said. "They hit shots. They had five kids that could han- dle the ball well. Just a good team." "We were going to have to play really well to beat them, and, really, to compete with them," McCutchan added. "I thought we played okay for a couple of quarters, the fourth and the first, but when you get outscored by 15 or 16 in a quarter, you really have no chance to beat a team like that." In the junior varsity con- test, freshman Mallory Hick- ey scored a game-high 23 points in a 58 -40 loss to Gib- son Southern. Junior Emi- ly Carnahan and freshman Gracie Jones added seven and six points, respectively. Soph- omore Maci Foster paced the Lady Titans with 17 points. The loss was the first of the season for the Lady Chargers' jayvee team after opening the season with nine consecutive victories.
