B-6 Sports Wednesday, December 13, 2017 The Press-Dispatch Central's lead to 18 -15 with four minutes left, a three-point play by Rea- gan Knies pulled the La- dy Jeeps into an 18 -18 tie with 1:52 left in the con- test. However, following an exchange of turnovers, Hunt hit two free throws to give the Lady Chargers a 20 -18 lead. Then, fol- lowing another turnover by Dubois, Carnahan hit two free throws with 8.4 seconds remaining to seal the win. "Mallory Hunt start- ed out the game playing well underneath," Knight said of Hunt, who had a team-high six rebounds as Pike Central out-re- bounded the Lady Jeeps 24-22. "Dubois did some switching around and started doubling down on her. With the outside shots not falling, and them doubling the post, we started hitting the cutters and driving the baseline, which opened up some other options." "Defensively, we played pretty good and also won on the boards again," Knight added. "I have to tip my hat to my girls because they really play great and take pride in their defense and re- bounding." Carnahan, who had a game-high five steals, paced the Lady Char- gers in scoring with nine points while Catt add- ed four points. Hunt, Leighty, Parker and Woodford tossed in two points each. Ashley net- ted one point. For the game, Pike Cen- tral (6 -4) made eight of 35 field goal attempts – a 22.9 percent average – and hit six of nine tries from the free throw line while turn- ing the ball over 16 times. "We still had way too many turnovers as a team, but we knocked down the free throws," Knight said. "The shooting from out- side was not there, but we played well trying to drive and penetrate to the bas- ket." Fuhrman paced Dubois with seven points while Freyberger grabbed a game-high eight re- bounds. For the game, the La- dy Jeeps made eight of 29 field goal attempts – a 27.6 percent average – and hit one of three tries from the free throw line while turn- ing the ball over 19 times. "This group keeps get- ting better each game and is fun to watch play de- fense," Knight said. "We have four games next week then, hopefully, a well-deserved break over Christmas vacation. We can get back to the gym and work on some dif- ferent things to help cut down on the turnovers." In the seventh grade contest, with the score tied 14-14 at the end of the third period, Dubois scored six unanswered points in the fourth quar- ter to defeat Pike Central 20 -14. Tiffany Arteaga led the Lady Chargers (6 -5) in scoring with five points while Chloe Williams add- ed three points. Liberty Taylor, Kahle Young and Keena Young tossed in two points each. Pike Central, which played at Forest Park on Monday, Dec. 11, will travel to Princeton on Wednesday, Dec. 13, be- fore returning home on Thursday, Dec. 14, to host Owensville. The Lady Chargers will then trav- el to Barr-Reeve on Sat- urday, Dec. 16.
