Get their confidence back up and this will be a very hard team to play against. With great guard play, and great post girls, we will be hard to defend." In the seventh grade con- test, Chloe Williams scored six points while Liberty Taylor added five more as Pike Central suffered a 20 - 15 loss to Fort Branch. Kah- le and Keena Young round- ed out the scoring for the Lady Chargers with two points each. "These girls have great potential," said Pike Central head coach Rachelle Johns. "Fort Branch wasn't better than us. We made too many turnovers and did not block out or rebound. Once they buy into the importance of the little things, they will be successful." "It was a learning experi- ence for them as well as for me," Johns added. "We will work on these things and become a better all-around team." idge, Henson, Tormohlen and Kyson Western of Pike Central; Bailey Booker, Jake Price, Cameron Saulmon and Eli Schenks of Wood Memorial; Gavin McKin- ney and Chance Newkirk of Jennings County; Luke Baird of Tri-Central; and Keegan Morris of Switzer- land County. "This was a great way to end these guys playing soc- cer together, with all of our guys being a big part of a nice win for the West All- Stars," Chad Western said. Matthew Haycraft photo PCMS 8th grade girls unable to overcome 12-point 1st-quarter deficit at Loogootee The Pike Central Middle School eighth grade girls' basketball team outscored host Loogootee 23-15 over the last three periods but it wasn't quite enough to over- come a 12-point first-quar- ter deficit in a 29 -25 loss on Monday, Nov. 6. Kylie Van Hoy scored six of her game-high 15 points in the first period as the La- dy Lions jumped out to a 14- 2 lead. "Loogootee started out in a pressure man-to-man defense and was trapping the first pass," said Lady Chargers head coach Eric Knight, whose team slipped to 1-1. "My guards had a tough time getting into the offense. The first quarter really hurt us as a team. Once we settled down and started using ball screens, we came out of it. We just ran out of time and ran out of timeouts." Ashton Catt scored four points while Alli Hold- er, Mallory Hunt and Kya Leighty netted two each as Pike Central outscored Loogootee 10 -4 in the sec- ond period to close within 18 -12 at halftime. A fter being outscored 5 - 2 in the third period to fall behind 23-14, Hunt and Al- bany Ashley scored four points each, Sophie Car- nahan added two and Han- nah Woodford hit one free throw to fuel an 11-6 fourth period that narrowed the fi- nal deficit to four points. During the fourth quar- ter, Loogootee made just two of 11 attempts from the free throw line. For the game, the Lady Lions were 5 -for-18 from the charity stripe. Pike Central, however, did not fare much better from the free throw line, hitting five of 16 attempts. "We missed 11 free throws and had 19 turn- overs and got beat by four against a very good team," Knight said. "Loogoo- tee played great defense and, on the offensive side, worked the ball well and cut and flashed to the ball." "Our defense was lacking in the first quarter," Knight added. "We made some ad- justments and really slowed them down after the first quarter. The girls started bumping cutters and get- ting in the passing lanes. This stopped Loogootee from the easy layups." Hunt led the Lady Char- gers with seven points while Ashley and Catt to- taled four points each. Kya Sullivan netted three points. Carnahan, Holder and Leighty tossed in two points each, and Hannah Woodford scored one point. "Every coach hates to lose a game, but I believe this was one of those games that we, as a team, learned many things we need to work on or address at the next practice," Knight said. "We hit the road again this week at North Posey, then finally play a home game next Tuesday. Hopefully, we get the kinks worked out and ready for the first home game in the newly painted Chargers gym." In the seventh grade con- test, Chloe Williams scored a game-high six points to lead Pike Central to a 19 - 5 victory over Loogootee. The game was limited to two quarters due to the Lady Lions only have six players, according to Lady Chargers head coach Rach- elle Johns. Jaylynn Capehart, Hanna Fair, Jasmine Leighty, Lib- erty Taylor, Kahle Young and Keena Young added two points each while Ken- nedy Willis scored one point. "Each girl contributed in some way, either scoring or rebounding, or defensive- ly," said Johns, whose team improved to 1-1. Pike Central returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 9, when they will travel to North Posey. On Tuesday, Nov. 14, the Lady Chargers will host Washington, with the seventh grade game tip- ping off at 6 p.m. MAC'S HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING 812-789-3065 104 E Center St, Winslow • macshtgac@hotmail.com T H I S F E A T U R E I S S P O N S O R E D B Y : PIKE CENTRAL OF THE WEEK Mac's Heating and Air Conditioning recognizes the Pike Central seniors who are involved in athletics.
