Pike Central answered by scoring five straight points – on a basket by Vaughn and three free throws by Nalley – to surge ahead 16 -13 with 1:05 re- maining in the first period. The Lady Panthers, how- ever, would answer with a 6 -0 scoring run of its own – on a basket by junior Cas- sandra Sullivan and two free throws each by Shane and Emig – to take a 19 -16 lead with 2:44 left in the second quarter. A fter failing to convert on 12 consecutive posses- sions – seven of which end- ed with turnovers – the La- dy Chargers finally got un- tracked, pulling to with- in 19 -18 on a steal and a layup by Vaughn with 2:04 remaining in the first half. Fouled on the shot, Vaughn hit the free throw to complete the three-point play, tying the score at 19 - 19. Evansville Reitz's en- suing possession end- ed with a steal by Nalley, who passed the ball ahead for the assist as a layup by Vaughn gave Pike Central a 21-19 lead with 1:54 left in the first half. The Lady Chargers ex- tended their lead to 23-19 on a steal and a layup by Vaughn with 1:19 remain- ing in the second period, then tacked on two more points – on a basket by Hendrixson, off an assist by Burkhart following a steal by Nalley – to take a 25 -19 lead with just under one minute left in the first half. Two free throws by Emig cut the deficit to 25 -21 with 43.3 seconds remaining in the second period, but Pike Central opened the second half with a 9 -0 scoring run – on a basket and a free throw by Hendrixson, two free throws by Burkhart, a basket by Nalley and two free throws by Vaughn – to stretch its lead to 34-21 with 3:52 left in the third period. "Once the aggressive- ness and intensity picked up, and we got a few bas- kets, momentum started to swing, we started get- ting in the pass lanes," Mc- Cutchan said. "The last three minutes of the sec- ond quarter and then the second half, it was much better, and it started with Lauren Vaughn up top. She tips a lot of passes. Brook got in the passing lanes. Er- ika did, too." "I got onto them a lit- tle bit to really push them- selves," McCutchan added. "We can't beat teams just kind of going through the motions. We really got to get after it and really work at it." A three-pointer by ju- nior Carlie Hobbs pulled the Lady Panthers to with- in 34-24 with 3:29 remain- ing in the quarter before a three-pointer by senior Demi Croak and baskets by Hendrixson and junior Becca Crow stretched the Pike Central's lead to 41-24. A basket by Compton cut the deficit to 41-26 but the Lady Chargers scored the first six points of the fourth period – on three free throws by Vaughn and one free throw and a basket by Crow – to extend their lead to 49 -26 with 3:31 left in the contest. Evansville Reitz would get no closer than 20 points the rest of the game. Hendrixson made six of 20 field goal attempts – in- cluding one of four tries from beyond the three- point line – and two of four free throws to finish with a game-high 15 points. Vaughn went 4-for-11 from the field and 6 -of-7 from the charity stripe to add 14 points. Nalley and junior Hailey Marchino both had sev- en rebounds for the Lady Chargers while Hendrix- son added six. Hendrix- son and Nalley had seven steals each. Vaughn added five steals. As a team, Pike Central made 18 of 57 field goal at- tempts – a 31.6 percent av- erage – and 14 of 21 tries from the free throw line. The Lady Chargers, who turned the ball over 18 times, were also 4-for-12 from three-point range. "They did a good job switching their defenses," McCutchan said of Evans- ville Reitz, which was play- ing the first game with Pike Central graduate Gary Loveless as head coach. "Most of it was zone. We have a couple of different zone offenses, but we were just kind of going through the motions. We were kind of getting a little flustered. We weren't in sync, and I don't really think we got in sync all night long, to be honest with you. Most of our scoring was off of just steals and turnovers." "So that's something that we're definitely going to work on the next few days before we play Boonville," McCutchan added. "If you were scouting us tonight, you're probably going to play zone against us. We can handle it. We got some good looks, but we've just got to finish better." Shane paced Evansville Reitz with 11 points while Emig grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. For the game, the La- dy Panthers made 11 of 40 field goal attempts – a 27.5 percent average – and 10 of 16 tries from the free throw line. Evansville Re- itz, which turned the ball over 37 times, also went 2-for-5 from beyond the three-point arc. Pike Central converted 16 of the Lady Panthers' 37 turnovers into 30 points while Evansville Reitz con- verted five of the Lady Chargers' 18 turnovers in- to 10 points. "We made some mis- takes defensively," Mc- Cutchan said. "We were kind of lazy in our man-to- man. So we had to go to a lot of trapping, half court." "We forced them into several turnovers, but we can't force everybody to do that," McCutchan add- ed. "So we've got to shore up our man-to-man de- fense to be able to compete against everybody we play. Tonight, we were just for- tunate that we could force several turnovers out of our trap." Pike Central will play at Boonville on Wednes- day, Nov. 8, and at South Knox on Friday, Nov. 10, before returning home to host Vincennes Lincoln on Tuesday, Nov. 14. The La- dy Chargers will then play at Wood Memorial on Fri- day, Nov. 17. "We play a good sched- ule, so we have to be ready to play," McCutchan said. "If we come out flat or just, like, going through the mo- tions, we're going to lose to most teams. We were just really fortunate. We played a good half, but you can't beat teams that we have coming up on our sched- ule just by playing a half of basketball." "We didn't play our best, but we're going to get bet- ter," McCutchan added. "This was a good win to get under our belts. We've got six days until we play Boon- ville, so we've got about a week to get better." In junior varsity action, junior Kenzie Dunn scored a game-high 11 points to lead Pike Central to a 39 - 32 victory over Evansville Reitz. Freshman Kenzie Powell hit a pair of three- point shots to add six points in the winning effort while three players – juniors Kelsey Barrett and Em- ily Carnahan and fresh- man Gracie Jones – tallied five points each. Powell al- so had a game-high seven steals.
