By Ed Cahill Pike County's jobless rate fell to 3.3 percent in September, according to preliminary figures released by the In- diana Department of Workforce Devel- opment on Monday, Oct. 23. September's 3.3 percent jobless rate was nine-tenths of a percentage point lower than the revised 4.2 percent un- employment rate Pike County record- ed in August. The 3.3 percent jobless rate was al- so the lowest recorded in Pike County during the month of September since 2000, when it was 2.5 percent. According to estimates released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, 6,114 of Pike County's labor force of 6,322 were employed during September, leaving 208 per- sons without jobs. In September 2016, when the coun- ty's jobless rate was 3.9 percent, it was estimated that 5,982 of the county's la- bor force of 6,228 were employed, leav- ing 246 persons without jobs. In adjoining counties: • Daviess County's jobless rate fell from a revised 3.3 percent in August to a preliminary 2.8 percent in Septem- ber. In September 2016, Daviess Coun- ty's jobless rate was 3.1 percent. • Dubois County's jobless rate fell from a revised 3.1 percent in August to a preliminary 2.6 percent in Septem- ber. In September 2016, Dubois Coun- ty's jobless rate was 2.9 percent. • Gibson County's jobless rate fell from a revised 3.6 percent in August to a preliminary 3.0 percent in Septem- ber. In September 2016, Gibson Coun- ty's jobless rate was 3.2 percent. • Knox County's jobless rate fell from a revised 4.0 percent in August to a preliminary 3.4 percent in Septem- ber. In September 2016, Knox County's jobless rate was 4.0 percent. • Warrick County's jobless rate fell from a revised 3.6 percent in August to a preliminary 3.1 percent in Septem- ber. In September 2016, Warrick Coun- ty's jobless rate was 3.9 percent. Statewide, county non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rates fell in 91 counties and increased in one county – Huntington County – from August to September. Elkhart County recorded the state's lowest unemployment rate during Sep- tember at 2.5 percent while Dubois and LaGrange counties tied for the second- lowest jobless rate in September at 2.6 percent. Vermillion County recorded the state's highest unemployment rate dur- ing September at 5.5 percent, followed by Lake County at 5.3 percent. The Elkhart-Goshen metropolitan statistical area had the state's lowest jobless rate among the state's 13 MSAs in September at 2.5 percent, while the Gary MSA had the state's highest MSA jobless rate in September at 4.9 per- cent. The jobless rate for the Evansville MSA was 3.3 percent in September, which was down one-half of a percent- age point from 3.3 percent in August. In September 2016, the Evansville MSA's jobless rate was 4.0 percent. According to data provided by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, the Evansville MSA – which includes Gibson, Posey, Van- derburgh and Warrick counties – had a total of 162,300 jobs in September, an increase of 2,400 jobs from Septem- ber 2016. From August to September, the Evansville MSA experienced signif- icant increases in the government (+900), mining, logging and construc- tion (+700), local government educa- tional services (+ 600) and professional and business services (+200) sectors. Those gains were partially offset by losses in the trade, transportation and utilities (-400), retail trade (-400), and leisure and hospitality (-300) sectors from August to September. Indiana's seasonally-adjusted unem- ployment rate rose from a revised 3.5 percent in August to a preliminary 3.8 percent in September while remaining lower than the national jobless rate of 4.2 percent. With the exception of one month when it was equal (October 2015), Indiana's unemployment rate now has been below the U.S. rate for four full years. Indiana's labor force had a net in- crease of 6,105 over the previous month, which was the result of 9,688 more seeking employment and a 3,583 decrease in employment. Indiana's to- tal labor force stands at nearly 3.34 mil- lion, and the state's 64.5 percent labor force participation rate remains above the national rate of 63.1 percent. In addition, Indiana's initial and on- going unemployment insurance claims are at historical lows. Private sector employment has grown by more than 24,900 jobs over the year, and has increased by 8,200 jobs over the previous month primar- ily due to gains in the trade, transpor- tation and utilities (+4,300) and the lei- sure and hospitality (+1,800) sectors. Total private employment stands at 2,693,700 and is 16,800 above the No- vember 2016 peak. ROSE MAT TESON Rose Matteson, 63, of Winslow, died at 10 :15 a.m. on October 26, 2017, at her residence.
