Pike County Treasurer Marta Query said the second installment of Real Estate and Personal Prop- erty tax is due Monday, November 13, 2017. If payment is made with- in 30 days after the due date, a five percent penalty will be added to the tax. A fter December 10, 2017, another five percent penalty will be added, according to State Stat- ue 6 -1.1-1. If taxes are previous- ly delinquent, a ten percent penal- ty will automatically incur on No- vember 14, 2017. Query said, "Statements, with coupons for each installment were mailed out in April 2017, and we ask that you please bring these coupons with you, or include them with your mailed payment, other- wise, you could be subject to a re- print fee." She added, "We also ask that you do not wait until the last day to call us concerning tax bills. We have over 25,000 tax bills to pro- cess, plus many lenders that re- ceive a lender list. We do not touch the mail until after November 13, 2017, due to lines of customers at the counters and phone calls. As long as your mail is postmarked by November 13, 2017, you will not be charged a penalty. Please, be patient with us….your check will be processed; however, it may be a few weeks before we get to it." For the convenience of the tax- payer, the Treasurer's office will extend their hours to be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, No- vember 8, Thursday, November 9, and Monday, November 13. The entire Courthouse is closed on Friday, November 10. "We will not be open any Saturday during this collection period," said Query. Second property tax installment due November 13 Union Twp. gets fire truck during Halloween party Department gets truck from Chandler for one dollar By Alden Heuring Union Volunteer Fire Department got a big red Halloween surprise: their new (to them) fire truck arrived during the com- munity trunk or treat event last Saturday. "We didn't know we were getting it today. We had no idea," Union VFD secretary Da- na Travis said minutes after the new truck pulled in and parked next to the Union Community Center. "This is awesome." The Clay Township Trustee purchased Union's new truck from the Chandler Fire Department for a single dollar, and sever- al other fire departments in the area spent the last month preparing the truck for ser- vice—cleaning, waxing and finding need- ed equipment for the truck. "It's replacing our old one that's been out of service for a while, so this gets us up-to-date, and it's just awesome," Travis said. "All these guys (the other fire depart- ments who pitched in) helped us out to get this truck. They've done an exceptional job. I'm so happy." According to a press release from former Indiana Volunteer Firefighter's Association president Steve Anderson, who helped pro- cure the truck for the Union Fire Depart- ment, this truck is one more step in a long journey upward for Union's volunteer fire- fighters. "The fire department located in the small community of Union had been closed for about five years. In late 2015, a new group organized to try to restart the department," the press release said. "Through creative fundraising efforts, this group was able to get the equipment and apparatus up and running. In September 2016, the new group made their first emergency run since re- opening. They finished the year with six runs and have made another nine this year." Anderson stated the next important step for the department is training: "Most of the current members (of the Union Volunteer Fire Department) are currently participat- ing in a basic level training class with other entry-level firefighters from Pike, Warrick, Gibson and Daviess counties." However, the one-dollar truck, a special delivery almost half a year in the making, made Halloween feel like Christmas for the Union firefighters. "I'm so excited, I'm like a kid at Christ- mas. This is exciting, this is our new truck! " Dana Travis said. "(I got inside and looked it over and) it's just beautiful. It's awesome. It exceeds our expectations... We've been waiting for this for a while." Bargain period extended to Saturday The October Bargain Pe- riod has been extended to Saturday, Nov. 4. By Andy Heuring A furnace malfunction is being blamed for a fire at Joann Grubb's residence on CR 125 S. in Logan Township and closing the door to the house is being credited with greatly limiting the damage. Tyler Thomas, who lives at the residence, said he was asleep, and his wife was putting their baby in- to a crib, preparing to go to school to pickup their other child. Thom- as said she noticed a "crackling" sound in the basement and inves- tigated to find smoke and flames. She ran back upstairs and woke him up. "I went downstairs and there was just flames all the way across the downstairs ceiling," said Thomas. "I was barefoot and when I went back upstairs I could feel the heat on my feet as I ran across the floor," said Thomas. He said they grabbed the baby and went outside immediately. Patoka Township Fire Depart- ment responded to the fire and were able to extinguish it. Pato- ka Fire Chief Brandon Truitt said Furnace blamed for Grubb fire Lindauer replaces Braun as State Rep. By Andy Heuring Part of Pike County will have a new State Representative starting today. Shane Lindauer was appointed Monday night by a caucus of the precinct committeemen rep- resenting State Representative District 63, which covers Jefferson 1 and 2, Washing- ton Township and all four Petersburg pre- cincts, as well as part of Dubois, Daviess and Martin counties. Lindauer, of Jasper, graduated from Indi- ana State University with a BS in Industri- al Technology Supervision and the Logan College of Chiropractic in 2004. He is also a member of the Indi- ana and Missouri Ar- my National Guard. Lindauer was elect- ed in 2010 to the Du- bois County Council. He and his wife, Sta- cy, have two children. He was appointed to fill out the remain- der of Mike Braun's term. Braun resigned his position effective October 31 to spend more time on his cam- paign for Indiana's U.S. Senate seat, now held by Joe Donnelly. The other candidate in the caucus for ap- pointment was Jerry Sidebottom, who is a county councilman in Daviess County. Pike County Republican Chairman Mark Flint said he talked with Lindauer before the caucus and since then as well. "He will be a good representative. He seems very intelligent and very interested," said Flint. Shane Lindauer (R) Dist. 63 State Rep.
