Matt Haycraft photo SUBSCRIBE TODAY! 812-354-8500 We're not afraid to shed some light on the truth. 3RD & 4TH PIKE COUNTY YOUTH FOOTBALL Bird Hunters host 12th annual Youth Day About 200 parents and young- sters spent the day outdoors at the Pike County Bird Hunters' Club 12th Annual NR A Youth Day this past Saturday. A fter registration and a free breakfast, youth took to archery, throwing darts, BB gun shooting, muzzle loading, 22 rifle marksmanship, trap shooting and Chukar hunting over dogs. The lunch break was followed by the Washington Police SWAT team and demonstrations by the drug K- 9 and Diesel, their black German Shepard police dog. Diesel had the youngsters standing and cheering when he was sent to take down a "bad guy." He is trained to attack and take down, stay and let go of the target with German voice com- mands. Following the presentation on SWAT Team operations and equip- ment, a random drawing was held for four 11-87 Remington 12 gauge shotguns and four 870 20 gauge Remington shotguns plus a grand prize Weatherby shotgun. There was a Ruger 22 rifle and several youth bow sets from Bear Archery in the drawing. About 40 Bird Club members worked on registration, breakfast, lunch and the various ranges. Kaye Gowin, Donna Watkins and Dar- lene Robinson handled the regis- tration, while club president Chris Kinman, Bill Shoultz and Fred Cook handled breakfast. Lunch was made by Sam Lamar, Grant Lamar, Dan Ellerman and Colon Ellerman. Vice-president Jeff Barton, along with Jerry Krieg and Rodg- er Whann, operated the 22 range while Bill Gowin, David Medaris and Howard Whitsell handled the BB gun range. The muzzle loader range was run by Keith Thomas, Tom Rudolph and Beau Dillon. Cur- tis Prater, Charlie Reneer and Joe Dillon instructed on the archery range. The dart throwing ven- ue was operated by Bob Madaris, Bobby Fisk, Joe Dillon and Jim Ca- pozella. The chuckar fields were under the guidance of Loyd Emge, Ray Bryant, Charlie Thomas, Ran- dy Beck, Jan Newfelder, Norman Dillon and Darren Bryant. Dus- tin Smith, Ralph Lacer and others guided shooters on the trap range. Terry Grimes emceed the day's activities, with Chris Kinman pre- senting the random drawing prizes and treasurer Donn Watkins han- dling the paperwork.
