Poplar Street, Petersburg SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Friday, July 3, 1942 A fter years of having their offices in the Adam's Building, the law firm of Ely, Corn and Nixon moved to their new quarters in the old Byers home on the cor- ner of Ninth and Walnut Streets. The actual moving took place yesterday. A welcome home dinner was served at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Cole- man in Glezen, Sunday in honor of Robert Bruce Hal- ey, who is home on a fur- lough from the navy. He has served fifteen years in the navy as an electrician mate. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Haley of Glezen. Pike County registered 251 men of 18 to 20 years in the fifth selective service registration Tuesday. The light registration was attrib- uted to the number of youths 18 to 20 years who have en- listed in various branches of the service or are working in some defense plants, away from Petersburg. The Blackfoot Coal Com- pany baseball team has or- ganized again and are ready to challenge any team in their class. The Coal Com- pany has dressed the play- ers out in new suits and is backing the team in every way possible. Their game next Sunday will be against those hard hitting Stendal boys. So if you want to see a fast game next Sunday, Ju- ly 5th come to Simtown. Ad- mission free. Aldon Perry is the manager. The eight men accused of landing on the East coast from German submarines for the purpose of commit- ting sabotage probably will be tried by a military com- mission next week, it was learned today, and the death penalty will be sought. Deaths: Catherine Marie Singer, 75, died at 7 Wednes- day evening at her home in Stendal; Dora Emma Allman, 72, died Monday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Harold Risher, Bay City, Mich.; Ot- tie Burns Gough, 72, of Giro died at her home Sunday, June 28, at 2:30 p.m. from compli- cations of diseases. SIXTY YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Friday, June 14, 1957 Six Pike County students were among the 831 stu- dents participating in In- diana State Teachers Col- lege's 86th commencement exercises Sunday, June 9. Dr. Raleigh W. Holmstedt, president of the college, de- livered the principal address for the out-of-door ceremo- nies on the campus quad- rangle. John Esmeier, of Winslow, attended the 8th Annual Farm Boys Forestry Camp at Henryville, Indiana, the last week of May as the Pike County representative. Es- meier was selected because of his outstanding work in 4-H Club Forestry projects and leadership ability. There have been rumors circulating around Peters- burg and other areas that The Press will change own- ers. We would like to inform our readers that this is far from the truth. The editor will leave for the Army July 2, but an announcement on the operational set-up will be published in The Press soon. The Bumper Jacks Auto Club met Thursday, June 6, at the home of Kenneth Hawbaker. The meeting was called to order by Pres- ident Joe Wilson. Plans were made to have Sgt. Don Smi- ley of the Indiana State Po- lice come to one of our meet- ings in the near future. The City of Petersburg has begun a new parking meter system. Those per- sons found guilty of over parking will be fined 50c. Courtesy boxes, where the 50c may be deposited, are found on nearby parking me- ters. This will save the vio- lator the time and trouble of reporting to City Hall. Marriages: Miss Emily Ann Whiting and Gary Lee Wirey were married at 3 p.m. June 3, at the Hazelton Meth- odist church, with the Rev. Royal Canfield officiating. Gro- ver Krieg, officiating; Funer- al services for Miss Cammie Hollon, 70, were held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, at the Curtis Funeral Home, Winslow; Har- ley Young, 72, Petersburg, died sudden;y at his home at 6:45 a.m., Thursday, June 13. FIFTY YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, June 29, 1967 In our city there is a coffee house sponsored by various churches in the area. Its pur- pose is to minister to the root- less young adults of the area. Everyone is welcome. The director of traffic safe- ty in Indiana has predicted that as many as 19 persons may die on Hoosier streets and highways over the July 4th weekend. Don't be one of the predicted 19. Through the first quarter of 1967, U.S. failures totaled 3,623. This compares with the 3,256 for the correspond- ing 1966 period- an increase of 11.3 per cent. Even if this still mild uptrend should not be accelerated during the re- mainder of the year, as we fear it may be, the number of busi- ness failures in 1967- figured at around 14,500 - would still be cause for concern. It may seem unbelievable to us in Indiana, but 39 states fail to pass on their Old Age As- sistance recipients the federal funds provided for Medicare insurance. Two states make a partial distribution and only nine (including Indiana) all owe the full $5 per month to be paid to the elderly poor. Sunday, July 2, New Leb- anon G.B. Church and New Liberty will be joining togeth- er for Homecoming. Marriages: Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Benefiel of Route 2, Winslow are announcing the approaching marriage of their daughter, Jo Ann to Willaim Chesser, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Chesser also of Winslow. The wedding is set for June 30, at 6 p.m. at Friend- ship Church. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, June 25, 1992 Three stolen vehicles were recovered from a pit in west- ern Pike County this past week, and six others have been located, according to Jeff Clements of the Pike County Sheriff's Department. A rural Petersburg man sustained first and second de- gree burns in his upper body when his home exploded in- to flames as he turned on a light in his bathroom, Tues- day night. "Proud to Be An American" is the theme of this year's Ru- ritan celebration at Otwell set for July 2-4. Gates to the festival will open at 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, with rides on the midway as well as nu- merous concessions. Pike County residents will have plenty of choices how to celebrate Independence Day next week. There are three different celebrations sched- uled in Pike County. The big- gest of those is a three-day festival in Otwell sponsored by the Jefferson Township Ru- ritan. The other two celebra- tions will be on July 4 and are at Prides Creek and St. Peters Lutheran Church in Stendal.
