Seven three-man teams were drawn from the deck of cards and the shotgun start began at 10 a.m. Mike Barrett, Heath Briggaman and Jim Dick- erson won the putt-off this week against Mike Hig- don, Bob Deffendoll and Brent Lovell. Both teams had identical 5 -under-par scores of 31 for nine holes and the winners were de- cided on the practice green with a closest-to- the-hole putting contest. Barrett's attempt was an inch closer than Lovell's putt and provided the win- ning margin for the team's victory. Senior Men's League be- gins at 10 a.m. each Thurs- day at the Prides Creek Golf Course, and men of all ages are welcome to participate. Free hunter education class to be offered A free hunter education class will be offered Mon- day, July 31, through Fri- day, Aug. 4, at the Sugar Ridge Fish and Wildlife headquarters. Class time will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. each evening. Attendance at all sessions is necessary to be eligible to test on the last day. This course is required for anyone born after Dec. 31, 1986, who wishes to purchase a hunting license. The class is sponsored by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources-Law Enforcement Division. This form must have the parent or guardian's signature. In the third and decisive game, Pike Central – leading 6 -5 – scored seven straight points to open up a 13-5 lead. Following an exchange of points, the Lady Chargers scored the game-winning point on an ace serve by Whann. "This was a very hot match by mid-day Saturday," Walton said. "We were a bit worried in the second game, when Morgan had an injury, where she collided with an- other player. She was able to come back to finish during the third game. We really stepped it up in the third, both defensively and offen- sively." Walton said that she was very pleased with how her team – which lost four se- niors from last year's squad that went 15 -17 – kept up a very positive attitude throughout all three match- es. "They were definitely un- sure several times through- out the day, but that's normal with new players, new line- ups and a new offense," Wal- ton said. "They asked ques- tions but did not get discour- aged. They adapted to new hitters and adjusted their de- fense easily." "Some things we are go- ing to focus on for the next few weeks, before the sea- son, is serve-receive, more confidence in jump serving, and connecting setters and hitters by quickening up the offense," Walton added. "Most of the juniors and all four seniors have been work- ing very hard on their jump serves but aren't quite sure of themselves just yet." Pike Central will open its season at Vincennes Lincoln on Tuesday, Aug. 15, before playing its first home match of the season against Wash- ington on Wednesday, Aug. 16. The Petersburg 12U competitive softball team representing Petersburg Little League in the Rural Girls' Softball League of Southern Indiana based out of Evansville recently won the regular season with a record of 12-0, scoring 184 runs while allowing only 11 runs. The team, coached by Chet Williams and Nick Willis, followed up with the league playoff championship, winning the end of season tourna- ment to polish off a 15-0 season.
