Stam Baptist Baptist Baptist CHURCH CHURCH Notes Notes Notes Assembly of God Continued in next column Ramblings of my mind by Lowell Thomas A recent poll found that most Americans felt happy most of the time. If this is true, some might ask why are so many going to therapists, consulting divorce lawyers and taking Prozac. Why do so many have a sense of emptiness? One thing we all agree on is people everywhere seek happiness. I visited Russia before the Iron Curtain came down and have made several trips to Russia since. The striking thing was not the shabby apartments, poverty of the people but the lack of happiness. There were few smiling faces and people appeared to be void of joy. They had been told for 70 years that there was no God. This lack of spiritu- ality left them empty and without an inner peace. When they accepted Christ as their personal Savior, their faces would light up and they would speak of inner joy. I recall an issue of Time, the cover sto- ry was on the science of happiness. The article pointed out that laughter and opti- mistic thoughts are good for your health and may help you to live longer. The Bi- ble says, "A cheer- ful heart does good like a medicine, but a broken spirit makes one sick." (Proverbs 17:22 TLB) I have observed for many years that those with a strong faith in God have a sense of peace, hope and joy. This inner joy does not come from earthly pleasures, material things or great wealth. Scientists know a lot about depression, fear, hopelessness and sadness. As they search for positive emotions and joy, they may dis- cover that faith is important and God can fill the emptiness in our lives. Many years ago the writer's father, then a city missionary, received a telephone call from a prominent liberal clergyman. "Peter," said the clergyman, "I've got a young man here in the outer office who seems to be in great distress. He says he feels he's so great a sinner that he's over- stepped the line and God won't forgive him. Now you've had a lot of experience with such people. What shall I tell him? " The clergyman didn't even know how to help a troubled soul. "Don't tell him a thing; I'll be right over ," said dad, and he left immediately to deal with the young man himself. Dad knew very well what was the matter with this young lad. The Holy Spirit had convicted him of his sin ( John 16:8). The lad had come to see himself as he really was — as God saw him, and sees any unsaved person, no mat- ter how religious. No person ever comes to see his need of a Savior until he has first come to see him- self as a condemned sinner before God. And it is only when we come to see ourselves as we are in the sight of a holy God that there is hope of salvation. The self-righteous do not see their need of a Savior. What would He save them from? What have they done that is so wrong? This is the way their reasoning goes. It is only when we begin to appreciate the holiness and righteousness of God that it dawns up- on us that our condition is hopeless with- out a Savior. Strange, is it not, that so many people have pictures hanging on their walls of our Lord crowned with thorns or hanging on a cross, yet do not really know Him as a Sav- ior, their own Savior. But when we have been convicted of our sin and our hopeless condition before God, we are ready to take in the words spoken by Paul to the trembling jailor at Philippi: "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved" (Acts 16:31). Well last week wasn't a whole lot better than the week before but things did get easier to take as I guess you just kind of get used to things. People who retire and say that they are bored with doing noth- ing must lack an imagination or don't have the will to do what they should be doing. My to do list just keeps getting bigger and bigger and if someone needs me for any reason in between I try to find time for them as well. I suppose I wouldn't want it to be easier because I might sit down and get too soft. We lost our neighbor last Tuesday af- ter having a heart attack Saturday night. At his funeral so many nice things were said about he and his family and it was very plain he had made his mark on this community. He and I had been friends for years, and worked together for many of those years. So many people came to pay their re- spects that there was a line any time you went to visit. His son said how many of us will ever get to do what we love doing the last day of their active life, what a bless- ing. We too can make a difference in our community if we do like Jack did and that was put things needing done before our self needs. It has been a shock to see him go but God certainly got a great man from his passing. Our Sunday message was about Saul and some of the things each person in- volved in his anointing as King of Israel. The Israelites weren't satisfied with just having God's blessings and leadership they just wanted to be like all the other nations and have a king to lead them. Sam- uel just wanted to help them get a king so he wouldn't have to hear them asking for one when they didn't really need one be- cause they had God. Saul was unsure about being king at first and even hid when it was time for him to be introduced to the people. The worst of it was the people of Israel because when they viewed that Saul was head and shoulders above all the others, they only observed the outer Saul and knew little more about him. As we look at how things seem to be, we too are only looking at the outer, nev- er considering the why, who or how comes Continued on page 2 Celebration Singers in concert this Sunday The Celebration Singers will be in concert Sunday, June 11 at 6 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 6483 W. 580 N., Otwell, in honor of celebrating the church's 125th Anniversary.
