Very Clean. Have you ever stopped to consid- er just how effectively children's tra- ditional literature teach- es kids, and especially lit- tle girls, that they must be beautiful—or else? Many of the age-old stories center around physical attractive- ness in one form or another. Take, for example, "The Ugly Duckling." This is a story about an unhappy lit- tle bird who was rejected by the better-looking ducks. Fortunately for him, he had a beauti- ful swan inside that surfaced in young adulthood. The story does not mention the ugly duckling who grew up to be an ugly duck! Then there's Sleeping Beauty. Why wasn't she called Sleeping Ugly? Be- cause the prince wouldn't have awak- ened her with a gentle kiss! He would have let a homely little princess go on resting. How about Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer? Ru- dolph had a weird nose that caused his little reindeer friends to laugh and call him names. They wouldn't let poor Rudolph join in the reindeer games. This sto- ry has nothing to do with reindeer. It has everything to do with children. This is how they treat the physically peculiar. Don't forget Snow White, who was resented by the evil queen. That's why she asked the question, "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all? " The queen was green with envy over Snow White's stun- ning beauty. And how about Dumbo the ele- phant? Dumbo was ridiculed for hav- ing big floppy ears until he used them to fly. Then there is the all-time favorite: Cinderella. It wasn't the carriage and the horses that shook up the prince when she arrived at the ball. You can bet Cinderella was a pretty little thing. These age-old stories are fun to read, and many generations of children have loved them. But we should under- stand their hidden messages, even if we continue to share them. There's a very serious side to the emphasis on beauty in the literature of the young. Little girls, especially, can begin to be- lieve that those who are unattractive are unworthy as human beings. That is a very destructive idea. From Coming Home By Dr. James Dobson Venturing out on a sum- mer getaway? Summer is a great time to pack your bags and escape your mundane everyday life for something more adventurous. Planning your excursion can sometimes be a stressful experience. These three mo- bile apps can help you find fun and interesting things to do, stay within your budget, and even include pets in the excitement. LOCALSCOPE LocalScope is an iPhone app that scours the web for information and presents it all to you in a neat, conven- ient fashion. For just $2.99, you can easily search for lo- cal food, museums, hotels, gas stations, coffee shops, shopping centers and any- thing else that may pique your interest. A fter searching, you'll be presented with nearly every bit of information you need - pictures and reviews to res- taurant menus, contact in- formation and even maps. What makes LocalScope unique is that it pulls infor- mation from all your favorite websites, and some you may not have even heard of, in- cluding Google Maps, Face- book, Yelp, Instagram, Four- square, Twitter, Wikipedia and Garmin. You'll also be able to nav- igate to your destination of choice from within the app. Once you've enjoyed your lo- cal attraction, you can easi- ly post reviews and pictures, and share your experience with your friends from with- in LocalScope. TRAIL WALLET When you're relaxing on vacation, it's easy to spend more money than you planned. That's why Trail Wallet is here to help. Once you set your daily budget for either your trip or the whole month, Trail Wallet lets you enter in all your purchases, and define tags and categories to help you organize them. You're allowed 25 items per trip in the free version; after that you must pay $4.99 to un- lock unlimited items. You can create your own tags and categories, and then use them to narrow your search results to make finding what you're looking for easier. Trail Wallet boasts a very intuitive interface, making it easy for you to navigate your purchases and get an over- view of your trip expenses. It is a joy to use, with sev- eral themes and interac- tive avatars to choose from. You can view very detailed charts of your spending da- ta, with plenty of filtering op- tions so you only see what you want to see. If you happen to be visit- ing another country, Trail Wallet will even automatical- ly convert your money to the local exchange rate of over 200 countries. Power users can also ex- port trip data from the app into their favorite account- ing software. BRINGFIDO If you're like most pet owners, you want to take your furry friend every- where you go. With Bring- Fido, you can easily find pet-friendly hotels, out- door restaurants, parks and beaches near you. Most en- tries contain detailed photos and reviews, which you can also submit yourself. BringFido includes a built-in map, displaying nearby pet-friendly attrac- tions and how to get to them. You can then contact the destination you're interest- ed in with the information provided in the app. Booking pet-friendly ho- tel rooms through Bring- Fido is incredibly conven- ient. You can enter the size of your pets and how many you have, then be given de- tailed pricing and booking for your desired destination. However, it is worth noting that some users have com- plained about the reliability of booking within the app, but regardless, it is a great start to your hotel search. If you don't have an iP- hone, BringFido also offers a website with all the con- venience of the free app. I'd love to see and hear about your summer excur- sions. LIME CHICKEN TACOS Share your favorite recipe! www.facebook.com/mealsinminutes Monica's Meals in Minutes PO Box 68, Petersburg, IN 47567 mealsinminutes@pressdispatch.net FACEBOOK MAIL EMAIL a MEALS IN Monica's MINUTES By Monica Sinclair I had two different recipes pop into my inbox this week for tacos so I took it as a sign that I should include one of them in my column this week. I don't know many people that don't like tacos and I've heard that some people celebrate with Ta- co Tuesdays. We usually have them in my house about once every two months, espe- cially when I feel like cooking something quick. The recipe I chose for this week uses chicken and it can cook while you are at work. How easy is that? Enjoy! INGREDIENTS 1-1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breast halves 3 tablespoons lime juice 1 tablespoon chili powder 1 cup frozen corn, thawed 1 cup chunky salsa 12 fat-free flour tortillas (6 inches), warmed Sour cream, pickled onions, shredded lettuce, and shredded cheddar, optional DIRECTIONS 1. Place chicken in a 3-qt. slow cooker. Combine lime juice and chili powder; pour over chicken. 2. Cook, covered, on low until chicken is tender, 5 - 6 hours. 3. Remove chicken. When cool enough to handle, shred meat with two forks; return to slow cook- er. Stir in corn and salsa. 4. Cook, covered, on low until heated through, about 30 minutes. 5. Place filling on tortillas; if desired, serve with sour cream, pickled onions, lettuce and cheese.
