On May 19, a Ferdinand man, bearing two packs of candy bars, was ar- rested in Hornady Park on a charge of child solicitation, a level 4 felony. Stephen Daniel Haug, 60, of 212 E. 24th St., Fer- dinand, was arrested by Pe- tersburg Police Cpl. Jared Simmons after he traveled from Ferdinand to Hornady Park, where he had asked a police decoy posing as a 13-year-old girl to meet and have sex with him. According to a probable cause affidavit, Haug sent a friend request to Peters- burg Police Sgt. Chad Mc- Clellan, who was posing as a 13-year-old girl, on May 4. Sgt. McClellan, in a proba- ble cause affidavit, said de- spite repeatedly telling Haug she was 13 years old, Haug sent messages to the decoy telling her he wanted to take her some place they could be alone. As the conversa- tions progressed, he began describing sexual acts he wanted to have with the de- coy. He eventually suggested to meet on Friday, May 19. The decoy asked him to bring a candy bar and agreed to meet him in Hor- nady Park. Police watched Haug drive into Hornady Park and start messaging the decoy asking where she was located. According to the affidavit, when Peters- burg Police Cpl. Jared Sim- mons drove into the park, Haug left the park, drove west on Highway 56 and was pulled over by Simmons. Sgt. McClellan said they found a cellphone in Haug's car and it had the messages from the decoy on it. The probable cause affi- davit said McClellan inter- viewed Haug at the Pike County Jail. He said Haug admitted to knowing the girl was 13 and sending her the messages. However, he claimed he drove to Peters- burg to "tell her he did not want a relationship with her because he was a married man." Along with the phone, po- lice found four condoms and two packs of Kit Kat bars in Haug's car. Ferdinand man arrested for child solicitation in park By Andy Heuring A Winslow man was ar- rested for drunken driving after he was involved in a crash at Sugar Ridge Road and Highway 61 on Monday, May 22. It was one of three operating while intoxicated arrests in Pike County over the last week. Russell H. Nelson, 56, of 1048 S. SR 61, Winslow, was arrested by Deputy Brad Jenkins at about 4:30 p.m. Jenkins said he was sent to a reported crash at CR 150 S. (Sugar Ridge Road) and Highway 61 and when he ar- rived, he found a van sitting on the highway with front end damage and a blue pick- up truck in a ditch with dam- age to the driver's side. He said Delbert Shim- er, who was driving the van south on Highway 61, told him Nelson had pulled out in front of him. Jenkins said when he talk- ed with Nelson, he could smell a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. Nelson said he had been drinking earlier and was not paying attention when he pulled onto Highway 61. He com- plained of chest pain and was taken to the hospital, where a blood test showed he had a blood alcohol con- tent of 0.19 percent, which is more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent. He was arrested on a charge of operating a vehi- cle while intoxicated and cit- ed for failure to yield right of way. A Petersburg man was ar- rested after he failed to use a turn signal at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday. Edward Bowling II, 55, of Petersburg, was stopped by Deputy Buck Seger. Depu- ty Seger said Bowling was driving a gray pickup truck and was weaving back and forth in his lane. He then failed to signal a turn from Highway 57 onto CR 200 N. Deputy Paul Collier, who assisted with the traffic stop, said Bowling failed field so- briety tests and was taken to the Pike County Jail, where he tested 0.117 percent for blood alcohol content and was preliminarily charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated. A Princeton woman was arrested on Friday night af- ter police stopped her for driving left of center three times in a less than a quar- ter of mile. Tina M. Knapp, 38, of 191 Roosevelt Ave., Princeton, was stopped on I-69, near the Highway 57 overpass, by Pike County Deputy Sheriff Buck Seger. Deputy Seger said when he talked with Knapp, he ob- served she had uncontrolled facial and arm movements and her pupils were unre- sponsive to his light, which he said was typical of meth intoxication. She failed field sobriety tests. Deputy Seger said when he asked Knapp if she was afraid of failing because she had smoked meth, she replied "it had been a while." Knapp was transported to the Pike County Jail, where she refused a chemical test. Deputy Seger said police found a one hitter smok- ing pipe in her purse and a plastic baggie containing a plant-like material identified as synthetic marijuana. Knapp was preliminari- ly charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, re- fusal; possession of synthet- ic marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. Three arrested for OVWI in separate incidents By James Capozella A call to 211 E. Syca- more street in Petersburg last Wednesday around 7:30 p.m. resulted in the ar- rest of Adam J. White on a charge of public intoxica- tion. White's wife, Jessica, had called dispatch stating her husband was acting cra- zy, possibly high on drugs, according to the police re- port. Pike County Sheriff's Deputy Dallas Killian, Dep- uty Buck Seger and Peters- burg Sergeant Chad McClel- lan responded to the call and were told by Jessica that her husband was under their trailer. The officers looked for Adam under the trailer but could not locate him. Jessica then advised the of- ficers that Adam had taken off the night before and that he had stayed in the woods all night long, according to the report. Searching continued with a description of the subject as wearing a pair of Amer- ican flag swim trunks with no shirt and no shoes. Of- ficer McClellan was called back to the trailer by Jessi- ca because of a spoon and some cotton she found in the residence. McClellan said in the report that this was commonly found when someone is using a needle to ingest methamphetamine. The officers received in- formation that a male sub- ject matching the descrip- tion had run through the shop area of Four Star Fab- ricators and was in the up- stairs office area. Officers found the subject sitting in a chair and he was uncon- trollably moving from side to side. Deputy Killian re- ports he asked Adam what was going on and the subject advised that he was running. Asked who he was running from, he stated "you," think- ing the police were chasing him. The report states Mr. White was clearly under the influence of methamphet- amine. He had to be con- stantly moving and his eyes were bloodshot and con- stricted. He was trying to ex- plain to the workers how he was not crazy and someone had been chasing him. He continued to ask for some- thing to drink. At that time he was placed in handcuffs that were double locked for his safety. Adam White charged with public intoxication after escapade Two accidents on Tuesday afternoon Two accidents occurred Tuesday in Pike County. The first occurred at about 3:45 p.m. on Highway 61 south of Winslow near Hathaway's Station. Two pickup trucks collided, with one overturning. Pike Coun- ty Deputy Sheriff Paul Collier said Jesse Hedge of Washington had stopped on CR300E at the intersec- tion with Highway 61 (Hathaway's Station) then pulled out in front of Lucas Burgdorf of Velpen, who was driving an S10 Chevrolet pickup north on Highway 61. The two collided and Hedge's truck overturned. Deputy Collier said Hedge suffered a cut to his head and Burgdorf had a bloody nose. Both there taken by ambulance to the hospital. The crash was reported at 4:18 p.m. Above, rescue personnel work with one of the victims in the foreground with an overturned truck in the background. Below, a red pickup truck driven by Michael Warner, of Petersburg, ran off the left side of the road near CR700N and continued north along Highway 57 for about 100 yards before rolling over and coming to rest on its side. Warner escaped serious injury in the crash that was reported at 4:57 p.m.
