Cardiac Care Our Community Can Count On L ongtime Santa Cruz resident Rich- ard Fontana learned an important lesson in 2011, when he visited his doctor for what first seemed like a minor problem. "When I walked, I'd cramp up a bit in my calves," Richard explains. His physician sent him to Dominican Hospital for a cardiovascular x-ray called an angiogram. Cardiologist Neil Sawhney, MD, gave him alarming news: Fontana was at high risk for a heart attack. Blockages in his coro- nary arteries needed to be cleared immediately. Fontana received treatment and it was a success. Fortunately, he did not have a heart attack and there was no permanent heart damage. Cardiac rehabilitation at Do- minican prevented further serious problems from developing. But that's not the end of Fontana's story. A few months ago he underwent a vascular procedure to prevent his kidneys from failing. Stents were inserted into his renal arteries to ensure healthy blood flow to his kidneys. Today, the retired president of Ledyard's, a local food distribution company, keeps busy man- aging several properties he owns. He also takes care of his grandkids, ages five, three and one. To show his gratitude to Dominican, Fontana is supporting an initiative that will considerably enhance cardiovascular care at the hospital – creation of a Cardiac Hybrid Operating Room, where physicians will be able to perform both major surgeries and minimally invasive procedures in the same fully equipped space, based on each indi- vidual patient's needs. ey'll also be able to handle complications and emergencies with great speed, increasing patient safety, reducing recovery times and saving lives. e operating room will feature the latest high-tech imaging, monitoring and surgical equipment. Philanthropic gis like Fontana's help Dominican invest in state-of-the-art tech- nologies and recruit outstanding cardio- vascular specialists. anks to generous supporters, Dominican now offers the most comprehensive cardiac care program in the Monterey Bay region. e American Heart Association recently honored the hospital with its Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for providing advanced, research- based heart failure treatment. at's great news to Richard Fontana. "Dominican has made remarkable strides in creating top-quality cardiovascular care programs," he says. "I hope you'll join me in supporting the Cardiac Hybrid Operat- ing Room, a truly significant advance in the medical resources available to our families, friends and neighbors."
