Thursday, July 12-July 18, 2012 How To Clean Up A Broken CFL Compact fl uorescent light bulbs, or CFLs, have grown increasingly popular as more and more consumers make environ- mentally conscious purchases. CFLs use less energy than traditional light bulbs, and, though they contain mercury, they actu- ally reduce the total mercury emissions be- cause of their energy savings. Though CFLs reduce the demand for power, they can be dangerous if broken. When broken, CFLs can release mercury vapor into the air, and those vapors can threaten a handler's health. While the Environmental Protection Agency notes that CFL manufacturers are working to reduce the amount of mercury in their products, it's still best to exer- cise caution when a CFL breaks. The following are a few tips, courtesy of the EPA, on what to do when a CFL breaks in your home or offi ce. Prior to cleanup When a CFL breaks, there are some important steps to take before you begin cleaning it up. • Empty the room of people and pets. As mentioned, mercury vapors can be harmful to a person's health, so reduce risk of physical harm by asking people to leave the room and take any pets with them. • Air out the room. Let some fresh air into the room where the bulb broke. Open the windows or a door to the outdoors, and air the room out for 5 to 10 minutes. • Turn off the air conditioning or heating system. • Gather the materials for cleanup, which include stiff paper or cardboard, sticky tape, damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes and a glass jar with a metal lid that can be sealed. If you don't have a jar on hand, a sealable plastic bag will work as well. During cleanup Once the room has been aired out and the materials for cleanup have been gathered, a few additional precautions are necessary to properly dispose of a broken CFL. • Do not use the vacuum. Though it might be tempting to use the vacuum, it could also be risky. A vacuum could spread mer- cury-containing powder or mercury vapors, so only use one if there is still broken glass around after all other cleanup steps have been taken. • Be thorough. When cleaning, be sure to pick up every piece of broken glass and sweep any visible powder. • Discard cleanup materials. Once you have fi nished cleaning, discard the materials you used by placing them in a sealable container. After cleanup Once you have fi nished cleaning the room where the bulb broke, it's time to discard the materials. • When cleanup has ended, immediately discard bulb debris and the materials used during cleanup (including a vacuum bag if you used a vacuum). Place the materials in a trash can or in a protected area, especially if you have curious kids around the house, until they can be disposed of. • Be sure you are legally disposing of the materials. Local gov- ernments typically have their own laws about discarding CFLs (broken or unbroken), with many mandating that such bulbs be taken to the local recycling center. Be sure to obey these laws. • Keep airing out the room if possible. Though airing the room out for 5 to 10 minutes might be adequate, when possible, air the room out for several hours. In addition, if possible, keep the heating and cooling system off for a few hours after the bulb has broken. CFLs save energy and can save homeowners substantial amounts of money on their monthly energy bill. However, when these bulbs break, let caution reign with regard to cleanup. He has struggled with drug and alcohol abuse. He particularly had problems with addiction to cocaine. He soon went on to Page High school. After graduating high school, he moved to Florida. He continued to struggle with drugs until his step brother, a pastor, introduced him to Christianity. Although Chamberlain hadn't grown up in a tightly knit Christian home and avoided religion most of his childhood, he claims it is half of what saved him, the other being his music. Chamberlain became lead singer for "Underoath" and has released four albums with them so far. Spencer was born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on January 4, 1983. He is a musician, best kknown as lead vocalist for the metalcore band "Underoath", Before leaving "Underoath" he was also the vocalist for the band "This Runs Through" in which his brother, Phil Chamberlain, was the drummer. Although born in Chapel Hill, he was raised in Greensboro with his mother and older brother. As a child Chamberlain's was well to do and had enough monty to pay tuition at Greensboro Day School. His parents divorced when he was fi ve series. In game one, Post 423 fell 10-3 on the road, then came back home and played maybe the best ball they had all season with a 5-3 victory. In game three, it was a cat and mouse type game, but Mint Hill prevailed 13-12 and the series ended the next night with a 13-9 loss. Post 423 (7-11), never really had a chance to gel this season after being forced to take a break by a new imple- mented rule of American Legion at the start of the campaign and inconsistent/ young pitching took its toll as well. Rutherford County Post 423 junior le- gion also fell in a best of three playoff se- ries this past week. They fell 5-4 and 8-5 to Monroe as the sixth seed. On the NASCAR front, driver A. J. All- mendinger was suspended just prior to Saturday night's Nextel Cup race in Day- tona for failing a drug test. Sounds like another Jeremy Mayfi eld all over again? As we remember, Mayfi eld had the same issue happen to him a few years back, but most feel Mayfi eld was guilty. If he wasn't on drugs somebody did a heck of a job setting him up. However, Allmendinger's case is more and B. Test A came back positive, which gives Allmendinger a chance to ask for them to test B. Allmendinger already did that on Monday and should have the test results by the end of the week. Penske teammate, Brad Keselowski has three wins already, while Allmend- inger has three tops tens this season and sat 23rd in points. At this time last year, Allmendinger had fi ve fi nishes of 11th or better with Richard Petty Motorsports and ranked 15th in points. Still, NASCAR didn't say what Allmend- inger tested positive for in general, but the test are fairly accurate. I am not saying that there could have been no way that a fl aw or a mistake occurred, because we don't really know how B is going to test. It all comes back to Matt Kenseth though. Lets just say, Keselowski, who has Miller Lite as a sponsor and factually Kenseth is from Wisconsin. Miller Lite's home offi ce, you guessed it…Milwaukee, Wisconsin. However, Allmendinger has just a one year deal with Penske. Many still think Kenseth will go to Joe Gibbs Racing, but you have to throw that sce- nario out there. www.rutherfordweekly.com 828-248-1408 Rutherford Weekly - Page 23 Parts & Service Needs!
