Essence is a six-year member of the Boys & Girls Club and is a sophomore at Shelby High School. Last summer she volunteered in the Jack & Ruth Schweppe Summer Day Camp Teen Leadership Program. She currently vol- unteers as a peer helper and homework tutor at the Club. Essence is the daugh- ter of Charlene Ratchford and the granddaughter of Rita Ratchford. In addition to her award, she was presented with a $100 gift card compliments of the Boys & Girls Club Board of Directors. Junior Youth of the Year Award The Junior Youth of the Year Award was presented to three-year Club mem- ber Samantha Davis who has been active in both the After-School Program and the Jack & Ruth Schweppe Summer Day Camp Program. Samantha is a seventh grader at Pinnacle Classical Academy where she is an Honor Student. Samantha is a regular leader and vol- unteer at the Club and demonstrates a positive attitude among her peers. She is the daughter of Odona Davis. In addition to her award, she was presented with a $50 gift card compliments of the Boys & Girls Club Board of Directors. Teen Camper Leadership Award The Teen Camper Leadership Award was pre- sented to Daleion Hopper. This award is presented each year to one teenage participant in the Jack and Ruth Schweppe Summer Day Camp Program who displayed outstanding leadership potential and motivated others to achieve more. This year's recipient is a true leader. He has been a Club member for seven years. Daleion is in the ninth grade, and is enrolled in mostly honors classes at Shelby High School. He is on the A-B honor roll and also plays on the junior varsity basketball team. After high school, he hopes to attend MIT or Cal Tech to become an engineer. He is the son of Amber Moore and the grand- son of Joyce Moore. His award included both a plaque to honor his achievement and a $50 gift certificate from the Boys & Girls Club's Board of Directors. Hoyt Q. Bailey Honor Day Camper Award The Honor Day Camper award is named each year in honor of an individual who has made a significant impact on the Boys & Girls Club. It is then presented to one club member who exemplifies the character and spirit of the Boys & Girls Club throughout their participation in the Jack and Ruth Schweppe Summer Day Camp Program. This year's award is named in honor and memory of Mr. Hoyt Q. Bailey. Bailey was one of the community leaders who founded the Club, and he served as the first board president. For more than 60 years, Bailey worked to make the Boys & Girls Club a place that would make a difference in the life of children, especially those that needed help the most. He was rec- ognized for his life-long support of the Club. The youth recipient of the Hoyt Q. Bailey Honor Day Camper Award is Demajae Rhodes. Rhodes is a student at Shelby Intermediate School where he plays the violin in orchestra. He has played on the club's basketball team for several years and has helped win multiple champion- ships. He has been an active participant in the both the after-school program and the Jack and Ruth Schweppe Summer Day Camp Program. He is the son of Micha Rhodes. Along with his award, he received a $50 gift card from the Boys & Girls Club's Board of Directors. honoring his achievement. The Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County held its Annual Awards Banquet and program at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Shelby on Friday Evening, April 8, 2016. Board President Jack Weller was Master of Ceremonies for the evening, which honored many of last year's volunteers, supporters and participants in the Club's programs. Located at 412 West Sumter Street, Shelby, the Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County serves more than 400 local children and their families. The Club's mis- sion is to enable all children in our community, especially those who need help the most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. Other awards presented: Volunteer of the Year Award: The Volunteer of the Year Award was pre- sented to Bill Chambless. He has been a member of the Board of Directors for more than 10 years and is chair of Finance Committee. Executive Directors Award: Jack Weller Outstanding Service To Youth Award: Tyler Perez, Ruchi Patel, Brandon "Kade" Jenkins Board Member of the Year Award: Tim Quattlebaum Man-Youth Award: Rich Berkowitz Woman-Youth Award: Susan Allen President's Award: Greg McIntyre Club Emissary Award: The Club Emissary Award was presented to Bob Chadwick in recognition of his 30-plus years of service. Good Neighbor Award: The Good Neighbor Award was presented to Turning Point Academy.
