Sports Xarayna Sekscenski Staff Writer The track season is taking a toll on the members because of the weather. All week the weat- her has only shown rain and high gusts of wind. The weather conditions are causing some tactics to be "un- controllable" according to Jade Godoy (shot put, discus, and mile). This is Godoy's first year of track and field and so far she says it is " much different" than Berrendos Middle School. "The season is going well so far, it is a lot different than Ber- rendos track season. The high school has different methods from junior high," said Godoy. According Karl Parks, freshman, track isn't as "fun" as cross country. "It isn't as exciting as cross country because all the races are on the track instead on dif- ferent terrain," said Parks. The track coaches are Co- rey Hein, Dan Ackley, David Micheal, Kim Wheeler, Laird Richards, Pat Rebol, and others not mentioned. The Varsity boy and girl throwers are working "hard" to make it to the top group in sections this year, according to Iverson. Iverson said this year has been the year of the "fastest" group of varsity boys yet to come to Red Bluff High. "This season is really good; it is the fastest group of guys I've ever ran with since I've been on track at the high school. Var- sity boys group "A" like Jonah McInnis, senior; Cody Case, senior; Kyle Case, junior; Cody Lehman, senior, Danny Gonza- les, senior; Michael Stone, so- phomore; Greg Dufour, sopho- more and Ty Smith, senior and Page 8 March 23, 2012 Track sets many high expectations Weather holds back many athletes during the first couple weeks of the season more," said Iverson. Some of the players have expatiated goals for this sea- son such as Iverson, Parks and Cody Case. "My goal is to run faster and to attempt the high jump, triple jump, and the 4x4," said Case. McInnis's goal is much dif- ferent from others for this rea- son. Others such as Jonah McIn- nis have high expectations for this years season of track, to set a record for his senior year. " My goal is to try for the triple jump record of 46 ft, it was set in the 70's. Im trying for the record because it has been a goal for me since sopho- more year, I already hold the JV record for the triple jump but I want to try just because it is my senior year," said McInnis. The track teams currently participating in West Valley today. Varsity baseball wins first league game against Las Plumas Tuesday Laura Defonte Staff Writer The Varsity baseball team won their first league game against Las Plumas 11-4. They are 9-2 for this season. They won the Oroville baseball tournament on March 10 by beating Pleasant Valley in the championship game 8-7. "The season is going pretty good. We just need to stay fo- cused and play hard and prac- tice hard because we have a lot of high goals for this year," said Senior Medesto Ramirez. The team will be playing hard and striving for the win in the season and are going to be keeping up good team work and being together as a team, Colin Igarta added. According to Ramirez, to meet their goals this season they will have to come together as a team and end the season going as strong as they started off. The team last year had some weaknesses, however. "They need to do better running the bases, and also need to improve on executing offense," said Coach Gallaty last year. Gallaty added the team pre- pares for games by making sure the pitchers are rested and pre- pared to compete at their best. Before games they review their offensive signs and plays, work on their defensive com- munication and physical play making. After tying against Oro- ville at the Wolfpack Invite they are really confident and excited in how the season will turn out, especially for Dylan Grossman the only freshman on this year's team. "It's fun for values great shots and Tomasetti is a good coach and we are hoping to do well this season," said Grossman. This team looks flawless, but they still do have weak- nesses. They hope to improve on these weaknesses through the season. "Not everyone on the team " Not everyone on the team my first year and am hoping that in time I will be number 2," said fresh- man Dylan Grossman. "We don't have any se- the importance in practice" niors, but we do have Dylan who is really good and over time he will be the best," said Daniel Frantz, junior. Frantz states that this golf team has a tremendous coach, Elena Tomasetti, who knows what she is doing and is an experienced golfer. This puts the golf team at an advantage against other high schools in their league. "Tomasetti is a great coach. She inspires all of us and makes us work hard," said Daniel Frantz. JV baseball starts league off with a 13-3 win against Las Plumas Rebecca Blanchard Sports editor The JV boys baseball team Boys Baseball Standings Varsity JV League Overall Overall League 1-0 10-4 Standings updated as of 3-21-12 played their first league game on tuesday agaisnt Las plu- mas with a 13-3 ending score. So far, they are off to a good start according to Nick Schluep with a record of ten wins to four losses. One hope of this season, as said by three players, is to win league for the third con- secutive year. "We hope to win league three times in a row, to do that, we need to stay together as a team," said sophomore Carson Ellis. Along with staying together as a team, the Spartans must improve on a few other areas, both individually as well as team oriented. On the area of individual improvement, Ellis said that he needs to improve on fielding a groundball as well as speed. On the other hand, the team has a wonderful group of play- ers and attitudes along with team chemistry are great ac- cording to Coach Sanders. Sophomore Nick Schluep said that the team's strengths are their pitching and batting. Despite the challenge of meet- ing the needs of individual players as well as the teams' needs, as mentioned by Coach Sanders, Schluep believes the team will be back to back to back league champions. The team has also managed to have a record in which the wins outnumber the losses de- spite having had several injured and sick players; they have been forced to play kids out of posi- tion in several instances. "This may be the fact that the team is blessed with a group of fighters, the young men won't give up at any point, they are flat out mentally tough," said Coach Sanders. The team will head down to Sacramento to play at the River Cats stadium tomorrow, which according to Sanders will be a great experience for the kids. Nick Reinhardt/Bluffer
