Twelve teams of about five students each gathered to represent the twelve districts of Panem, the setting for the popular book series by Suzanne Collins: "The Hunger Games". The competitions were loosely based on the famous challenge that is the focal point of the books, where the contestants fight to the death for all to see. "There are twelve districts in the book, one was masonry, or coal, or grain. They supplied that to the Capital. Each game reflected an industry or district," said Kim Clawson, the organizer of the competition at Red Bluff High. "We had people organize themselves into districts, like in the book, and dress up. District Nine, Grain, won." Tim Dohmen, a member of the winning district, said of the games, "I really enjoyed the experience. We won because we had awesome teamwork!" Adrienne Hinkston, of the same team, said, "I had fun playing all the games, and thought it was a creative way to promote reading." Her teammate, Amy Shoff, said, "I thought it was good entertainment." The SCNAC program provided food, keeping with Different members of each "district" participating in the real life Hunger Games on March 19. the theme, and Teacher Cari Rodriguez played the part of the flamboyant announcer, and advisor, Effie Trinket, complete with a pink wig. Madi Cumpton/BLUFFER Art students take part museum trip Becca Blanchard Staff Writer For the second year in a row, a group of Red Bluff students have taken a trip to a museum. Last year, it was to The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. This year they took the trip to the Crocker Art Museum on the 13th of March. Nine students attended the trip which was made possible through a donation made by the parent of an art student. "The students who went were ROP Graphic Arts, first followed by a dedicated few The only stops were a rest area, the museum, and In and Out Burger in Woodland. Haylee Johnson said the trip was exciting. Along with that, the trip had benefits and obvious negatives. "The benefits are huge. (Left to right) Elisa Griego, Bayli Johnson, Marco Ocampo, Tio Rowe, 4 of 9 students who went to the art museum. Becca Blanchard/BLUFFER Art 1B and Art II students," said Mr. Hendricks. The trip was organized by Mr. Sinclair during summer school and Mr. Hendricks assisted in chaperoning it. The trip took one full school day. The group left just after 8:00 AM and returned at 3:09 PM. Any time we can get students away from Red Bluff, and experience culture at this fine of a museum, it is eye-opening. The obvious negatives are missing school, risking an accident in an automobile, and the potential for long boring day," said Mr. Hendricks. One thing that Johnson noticed was that some of the artists made fun of the "wealthy" and she thought it was funny how they had a sense of humor. One downside however, according to Johnson, was that the tour guide showed the group the contemporary art then simply left. The group did eventually find their way out and get to the bus. "I would love to do this every year. In fact, I would love to figure out how to afford to take more students," said Hendricks. Overall, the trip was a success and it is hoped that it will occur once more next year.
