Teen Drinking -Page 6 School Board offers superintendent position to out of state principal Volume CXIII, Issue 12 March 23, 2012 Serving Red Bluff High School since 1901 Bluffer Austin Chase Editor-In-Chief T he RBJUHSD will be fea- turing a new superintendent for the 2012-2013 school year. The Governing Board unanimously decided to offer a contract to Lisa Escobar, a cur- rent school principal in Seattle, Washington. Previous to offering her the contract, the Board was consid- ering a blended superintendent/ principal position. However, the Board ulti- mately decided a sole superin- tendent. "The Board did consider the idea of a blended position but felt strongly that a district of our size needed a full time Superin- tendent. We have a population of around 1700, usually school districts around 400-600 would have a blended position," said Jack Hansen, interim Superin- tendent of RBJUHSD. Furthermore, in past years the Board has considered the opinion and assistance of an Auxiliary Board. This is a pan- el of parents and teachers that also examine the interviewees for the open position. "There were two reasons we did not have a second interview committee. First, the CSBA op- posed the idea saying that when you have candidates inside the " Austin Chase Editor-In-Chief T here are many options outside of high school. Some seniors go to college, others straight into the workforce, and some join the military. The military is a path that can provide a job and in some cases an education to graduating seniors. However, the U.S is currently fighting active wars or "conflicts" in Afghanistan, the Philippines, Somalia, Africa, the Trans Sahara, and Pakistan. These are only the countries the U.S. is currently fighting in; there are others in which we have a standing army. This poses the question: Is this the place for RBHS graduates? Recruiters are able to recruit students on the RBHS campus during school hours. However, the school does not see this as a bad and has generally always had good relations with the military. "We are required by law to allow recruiters on campus. If we didn't allow them, we would lose some funding from government. However, we have a very good relationship with the recruiters that come on campus," said Mrs. Brownfield, associate principal at RBHS. It has been over a decade since administration has had to prevent a recruiter from contacting a student. "For a lot of lower economic families, the military is a way out. I think some recruiters take advantage of this but on a recruiter to recruiter basis," said Mr. Norton, Government and Economics teacher at RBHS. "In the past, we have had recruiters hound top students to the point where parents have called, but our current [recruiters] have done very good," said Brownfield. Soldiers who travel overseas to serve our country face the chance of death. This leaves some wondering: why the military? Currently, the number of RBHS students entering the military Upcoming SAT Test Dates There are two available SAT test dates in the next couple months. The test dates are May 5 and June 2. The prices for the tests vary; you may even qualify for a fee waiver. Talk to your counselor in the counseling center for more information. The deadline to sign up for the May 5 test is April 6 and for the June 2 test, it's May 8. I want to join the military because they can provide a life I can't have without them. Russel Eckhardt Junior Joshua Campbell, current young Marine stands in the Red Bluff High School hallway. He represents the graduating seniors that are enlisted soldiers in the military. " This percentage is the minimum; it is the number of already enlisted seniors before graduation takes place over the last 3 years. 94.1% Tehama County right out of high school is not clear for the year of 2012. It is finalized at the end of the year right before graduation; although, some have already enlisted. "I want to join the military because both my Grandpa and Dad were in the U.S Navy. I will also join the Navy," said William Kaeding, 17 year old Senior at RBHS. Kaeding will be joining the Navy because of family history. Others will be joining the Marines for the sake of their future families. "I want to join the military because they can provide a life that I can't have without them. They will give me more experience in life than being in the civilian world. I will also gain medical benefits for my family," said Russel Hardt, 19 year old senior at RBHS. Scholarships still available Scholarships are still available seniors! College is expensive no matter where you are going; so check the counseling center websites to view all the current scholar- ships to which you may apply. Don't be too late! For these students, the pros of the military outweigh the cons as they are enlisted to serve our country after high school. However, this does not eliminate their fears. "I am afraid of losing the ones I love," said both Kaeding and Eckhardt. After careers in the military Kaeding hopes to pursue a career as a small town Sheriff in a town like Red Bluff. Eckhardt did not elaborate on a future career, but said, "After I have done my duty and served my country, I will hopefully be financially suitable to buy a house, take care of my loved ones, and live my life to the fullest." Some students will be going to college next fall, others will be working, but some will be serving our country in the United States Military. Eighth Grade Parent Night Eighth grade parent night is March 23 on the Red Bluff High School Campus. It is an opportunity for parents of middle school students to be informed about their student becoming an RBHS ninth grader. Afghanistan Average Percent of RBHS Seniors that Enlist 5.9% school, that people on the aux- iliary board have already made up their minds and it can be very awkward," said Marianne Willard, RBJUHSD Board member. Some have said this has caused negative tension be- tween the faculty and the stand- ing superintendent as well as Board Members because in the past the teachers' opinions have been taken into consideration before a contract was offered. Willard followed this by say- ing, "Secondly, the Board felt strongly that they are elected representatives of the commu- nity and therefore are respon- sible to make this decision."
