"I decided to do Mr. Spartan after seeing my first Mr. Spartan in middle school. After that I had no doubt that I'd be on that stage senior year," said Colin Roth, 2010 Mr. Spartan winner. The Mr. Spartan show first began in 1994 and since then has become a bigger and better show with a lot more technical effects and it has gained more community support. The support of the community means a great deal to the contestants. Mr. Spartan is expected to bring out about 550 guests to the show. But have you ever given a thought about the harsh cold and its' effects on your skin? This is where Vitamin E steps in. This particular vitamin is great because it serves as an antioxidant for your skin and protects those precious skin cells that could be potentially harmed by ultra violet lights. It also protects against the cruel cold which more often than not dries skin out which leaves a pasty or flaky appearance. This supplement will, through time take out uneven skin tones also. Rumors receives recycled set By reusing materials, the school will save about two thousand dollars Alaina Rudnick Staff Writer The ROP Construction Class and Drama Department may seem like two separate worlds to most people, but in the last few weeks they have been very involved with each other. T h e y are helping the school, and the environment, by recycling the set from Romeo and Juliet, and past plays, to make the set for the new play, Rumors. "Some of the platforms that they stand on, those are five years old. The walls? This will be their fourth play," said David Rottenberg, the ROP Construction teacher. According to Rottenberg, the school will save about two thousand dollars by using old materials. "We have spent about $250 so far on lumber. We've saved about $1000 just by using that (old) lumber," said Joe Palubeski, play director. minutes Dillon (A lead actor) goes up and down five times. All the bedrooms and doors are being used," Palubeski explained. Rottenberg said, "In the play the staircase is the center piece Christina Muto, Ryan Coley, Mark Smith, Jane Kinner, and Caitlin Ruszczyk practice on the nearly finished set. "This maybe giving away a trade secret, but because what we do is all an illusion, it only has to look good from a distance; we can take really cheap grades of wood. (To save money.) Most of the trim is particle board and plywood. They also only have to look good on one side,"said Rottenberg. That doesn't mean they do e ve r y t h i n g with this Aaron Vasey/BLUFFER Palubeski believes that the set is going to be very important to the play; it to be integral. "It's almost an actor in the play; it sets the tone. Without the set it would be very confusing. They go up and down the stairs numerous times; I think in the first five of the play, and that's where we started. And the rest is about sight lines. We work with the director and try to create what's in their mind." Though it is a lot of work, Rottenberg said that there are ways they use to make it easier on themselves and the school. a t t i t u d e . According to Rot tenberg, they focus a lot on student safety. The entire set was built by ROP construction. According to Rottenberg, the set is nearly finished. When asked what there is left to do, Rottenberg said, "We have to do the trim. There is nothing structural anymore, just painting and things like door handles." Connect crew is hoping to expand KC Jacobsen Staff Writer Connect Crew is a program offered through ASSETs that was formed in order to help freshman feel more comfortable in their first year of high school and also to help them form lasting connections with older students. "Connect Crew's goal is to bridge the gap between upperclassmen and lower, and to also be a support system and connect them to the high school," Said Alana Hinkston, senior. Deneise Bill, ASSETs Project facilitator, said that Connect Crew would like to help upperclassmen see freshman in a different light, because generally freshman are picked on and treated harshly at our school. She said that since she's been a part of the Connect Crew, she has noticed a difference in the way older students have treated the freshmen, and the program would like to continue changing the way the older students view them. The way Connect Crew works, is at the beginning of the year, each member is assigned a small group of freshman that they continue seeing throughout the school year. "It's like a buddy system, and it gets freshmen involved in the school," said Emily Mota, sophomore. This year, connect crew has held many activities in order to help bring the freshmen out of their shells and continue the connections between them and their upperclassmen. During this school year, members have hosted parties, tail gate parties during football season, and fun lunch time activities. Connect Crew's goals for next school year is to expand their program. They want freshmen to become integrated into the school and develop a sense of familiarity, belonging, and comfort. Also, the program would like to see more excitement, more involvement, and more things going on next school year. Applications for Connect Crew will be available this Spring. Connect Crew also developed a side program called Frosh Fusion, which is tutoring for struggling freshman who need some extra help. Mr. Barrow (Teacher) "Hello Sun River Oregon! Big time fun!
