February 17, 2012 Arts and Entertainment 4 'Woman in Black' modern, entertaining ghost story, Radcliffe greatly distracts with new role Natalie Almond Features Editor T he Woman in Black follows the story of young lawyer Aurthur Kipps ( Daniel Radclifffe) as he uncovers the mysteries lurking in the small village that he has been sent to settle an estate in. It just so happens that the house he is dealing with is at the heart of all the citizens' unrest. Overall, this movie was very entertaining. It was a good old- fashioned ghost story with a plot line that kept me engaged until the very end. The movie's set really contributed to the eerie feeling of the movie. The house in which most of the movie takes place fit perfectly with the whole feel of the movie. The house is completely cut off from everything when the tide comes in which makes it impossible to get away. The idea of having no escape makes the movie that much scarier. This movie was adapted from the 1983 novel written by Susan Hill. Fans of the book may be annoyed by the fact that parts of the story line were changed, but if you haven't read the book, it's a good story. I loved the fact that they didn't try to wrap it up into a perfect happy ending. The one area that I think this movie could have improved upon was casting. While 'A Certain Slant of Light' creates a sense of wonder A ghost story you won't want to put down Xarayna Sekscenski Staff Writer - - "A Certain Slant of Light" by Laura Whitcomb, written in 2004, is a lovely book, made to intrigue romance and create a sense of wonder for the reader. The story portrayed at first is about a ghost that haunts a high school teacher. Helen, the ghost, is in love with the high school teacher and follows him everywhere he goes. While sitting in Mr. Brown's class, for the first time in 130 years that she has been de- ceased, Mrs. Brown feels human eyes, which are focused on her. James, a student of the teacher, can see her as clear as day, and it creates a spark that will make an everlasting fire. James and Helen form an unbreakable, yet strange, bond together that lasts forever. Jenny, a teenage girl that goes to James's school commits sui- cide and Helen takes her place in her body, and then James and Helen join together in a more realistic relationship. Jenny's parents are strict religious par- ents, while James lives with his older brother, Billie. The struggles these young teenagers go through will touch your heart, and make you ex- cited to turn the page and never want to put the book down. Laura Whitcomb creates a sense of relaxation, anxiety, and the right amount of romance to keep readers interested. From the beginning, the au- thor gives descriptive and en- tertaining lead in to the book. I recommend this book for read- ers who like to read about fic- tion and love. Daniel Radcliffe didn't do a bad job, it's hard to imagine him as anyone other than Harry Potter. Apparently, I'm not the only one. After his character Aurthur accomplished an extremely heroic feat, a voice from the audience called out, " Fifteen points for Gryffindor!" I couldn't help but laugh. Maybe after a couple more movies he will be able to shed his attachment to Harry Potter. At least I hope so because it's very distracting. For the most part, the rest of the movie was well cast with convincing performances from most. The movie was scary enough to make me pretty frightened in the theater. But once I left, it didn't stay with me. I was able to sleep easily that night. If you prefer to be scared by a movie for days after you see it, you might be a little dissapointed. But if you just enjoy creepy ghost stories, I would definitely recommend this movie to you. A very scary movie overall, but you will still be able to sleep after you see it. 'Grieves' album potential success, as it relates to all Eddie Spidle A&E Editor In June of 2011 Grieves released his newest album 'Together/Apart' with his long time friend and other Rhyme Sayers artist Budo. Grieves based his album on his past life events from his childhood to his most recent struggles as an adult. The albums songs generally seem to go in chronological order from when he was a kid and had no worries, to his present day and life of facing inner demons from addictions and alcohol abuse. This album also features other artists than Budo, although he is the main cameo in the album. As Grieves album starts out with the song 'Light Speed' where he focuses the most on his life events, he takes a more realistic look on life and enjoying the little things. "It's like I'm moving at light Laura Whitcomb gives a descriptive and entertaining lead straight from the beginning speed. Slow down, you need to slow down every once in a while sometimes you'll see how the world goes round. You need Will Smith read the script for "Men in Black" and wa Fact of the Issue wanted no part in the movie, but his wife convinced him to take the part. http://www.hiphopcanada.com to slow down every once in a while cause you don't know, you don't No, you don't need to go so fast." These lyrics hold a deeper meaning that just slowing down; you also need look at the world from a different perspective. The song also features his ability to play the piano, which he uses to create a smoother and slower rhythm to pull in the audiences' attention. The piano plays a key part in the album also to make him different from other rappers or rhythm based artists. Unlike other rappers, Grieves doesn't focus on articles that people believe they need to be happy like women, drugs, and partying. He focuses on life, and family in 'Bloody Poetry' another song from this album he uses his and his sisters' fight with addiction and their struggles to create an image that could relate to its viewers and their own inner struggles. Although he is a rapper, he uses his own style to relate his point with the lives of his fans through the old school beats and use of lyrics, he uses personal experiences to finish his songs. This album on iTunes also comes with a video to explain his views on the album and the songs he wrote. I would recommend this album to everyone for he relates it to his fans lives no matter who they are. If you are looking for that album that can just relate and keep you interested this is the one for you. A rapper who focuses on life and relates to his listeners mystery
