3 Arts & Entertainment February 17, 2012 'Soul Calibur' awes players with intense fights Josiah Vasey Staff Writer Soul Calibur V is the latest installment in the Soul Calibur games, a series of high octane fighting games that have done very well in the past. They are all great games, and the newest entry is no exception. Soul Calibur V is an amazing game that will keep you entertained. It has stunning graphics and vivid colors. It has a large array of characters to choose from , each with their own fighting style. Character creation returns, with some cool new features. However, the game introduces few big changes to the old formula; so, if you didn't enjoy previous Soul Calibur games, you probably won't enjoy this one. Soul Calibur V's gameplay is the same as previous entries in the series, with a few exceptions. When players http://1.bp.blogspot.com The opening image of ʻSoul Calibur 5ʼ that shows the contrast in the game between good and evil. strike an opponent, they build up points in their "Edge Meter". When you have points in it, you can perform special moves that are more powerful than normal. The more points you have in the "Edge Meter", the more powerful the attack. The campaign in Soul Calibur V is short, but enjoyable. It focuses on Patroklos, a young man on the search for his sister. Bluffer Staff Pick 'Priest' (2011) Eddie Spidle A&E Editor In the 2011 film 'Priest' stars Paul Bettany as the lone priest who breaks all laws written by the church to hunt down a vampire hoarde and get back his secret daughter. Yes, I also got the thought, "Oh great another movie where the lone hero goes and hunts down vampires," but by the end of this film I was actually quite impressed with the final prod- uct from director Scott Charles Stewart. To me, at the beggining of this film, I felt that they should have just revised the title to 'Van Helsing: Part 2'. When reading about the film before watching it, I was skeptical and there were a lot of reasons why. The plot was almost iden- tical. A man who is involved with the church gets a sidekick that happens to be a small town Sheriff named Hicks (Cam Gi- gandet) and they go off to save a girl whose family was slain by vampires. That seemed closely related to the monster killer raised by the Vatican sent with a small Padre to kill Dracula and save the Princess The campaign is mainly there to introduce newer players to the combat system and introduce new characters., but It isn't the main focus of the game by any means. The real improvements come in the character creation. The player can create more complex characters with different weapons, clothes and colors. Even the characters voice can be modified to be low and bellowing to high and squeaky. My favorite part of this was character editing. If you don't like the way a character looks, you can edit them. For example, if the player finds Nightmare to be too scary, they can change his armor to bright pink. Soul Calibur V is, by far, the best entry in the series. With better graphics, better combat and detailed character creation it is a great game, but it doesn't introduce anything really new to the series. It is really just an updated version of it's predecessor, which is fine if you enjoyed the previous games. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys fighting games. 'Soul Calibur V' closely taken after all other 'Soul Calibur' games. 'The Vow' reflects on true love with an original plot Laurel Shoop Topics Editor With Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum, the leads of "The Notebook" and "Dear John," co-starring in another epic romance released just in time for Valentines Day, it seemed necessary to count down the days until the premier of "The Vow." Unfortunately, there was so much anticipation for this movie that it turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. While McAdams and Tatum Priest (Bettany) interogates a human slave of the vampires. of Transylvania before her and her family are locked out of heaven. Despite the multiple similar- ities these movies are actually quite different, Priest (Bettany) was trained by the church along with five others to fight the vampire hoardes and save hum- manity and was later disbanded due to the "extinction of the vampires" and led to live a nor- mal life. As he breaks the laws bestowed apon him, the church brings forth the man and wom- en that once worked beside him to capture or kill him. One of these "Priests" named Priest- ess (Maggie Q) goes to warn him of his conviction but then helps him to destroy their old friend who was changed by the Vampires, and is now leading the hoarde. I recommend you watch this, just beware of the blood, gore and intense fight scenes. make an adorable couple and the movie has an interesting plot-line and touching scenes, it lacks the depth and passion found in those unforgettable romances like "The Notebook" and "The Titanic." That being said, "The Vow" was still much better and far less cheesy than typical romantic movies (probably due to the chemistry between McAdams and Tatum and the fact that it was based on a true story). The problem is, the bar was raised so high for this movie that no matter what, it probably wasn't going to meet peoples' expectations. After all, who wouldn't expect a movie starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams to be flat out amazing? "The Vow" begins when newly weds Paige (McAdams) and Leo (Tatum) get in an awful car accident that leaves Paige in a coma and Leo hardly injured at all. When Paige wakes up, she is left with only her long-term memory, and to her, the last five years of her life are nonexistent. Not only does she forget who Leo is, but she still thinks she is engaged to her ex-boyfriend, Jeremy. She also does not know why she dropped out of law school to become an artist, and does not remember any of the family drama that occurred during the last five years that caused her to break off all communication with her parents. Paige is faced with the decision to either rewrite her past and "do it right" this time like her parents and Jeremy want, or step outside her comfort zone and continue living with a man she doesn't know and doesn't remember being in love with. "The Vow" is both sentimental as well as rather humorous in certain parts. McAdams and Tatum mak e a believable couple, and overall, this is a cute story. This movie follows a unique plot formula seperate from other romances, but it is still somewhat predictable and just not one of those amazing movies I'd want to watch over and over again.
