February 17, 2012 Viewpoints 2 Issue of gay marriage will be resolved over time... C alifornia has once again become the focusing point of the gay-marriage issue after a recent decision by a California court that declared Proposition 8 unconstitutional. This was the same proposition that was passed by voters in the 2008 election that eliminated the rights of same-sex couples to marry. We believe the court was right in its ruling. This has been an issue that has plagued our society for far too long; it is holding us back from effectively maturing as a nation and as a people. More now than it has ever been before, this has become an issue pitting young against old, as the older generations are holding onto outdated ideas and traditions, resistant to any change that might affect these ethical and religious principles. "Older generations are holding onto outdated ideas and traditions ." T he internet is one of the main ways to start a relationship, whether it's online chatting, dating websites, or just messaging through Facebook, and eventually some of those people will date. In this century when people start dating it's "important" to let the social network know since we're all too lazy to just tell everybody. Teenagers are so caught up in the social life, whether it's friends, boy problems, girl problems, school issues, activities, or the drama-filled social network such as Facebook. Yes drama-filled, because you let people see almost all of your information, and when people find out interesting things like a relationship, they will dig deep into it and you will get problems. As if relationships didn't have their own problems with fights and stuff like that, the internet just brings more and more people into it that don't even know the whole hallway. Honestly, I would expect it just because of how girls act towards each other these days, but to trash talk and attempt to ruin a relationship? Do people really have the time to sit there and do that? I honestly think if you are going to date somebody, don't instantly put it up online. You want people to know that you're dating, then walk around school holding hands. At least take a week or two to even see if it works out, get used to one another, and let people get the hint. As soon as the Veronica Smith relationship. relationship is confirmed saying "so and so is in a relationship with so and so," instantly somebody will be mad, and that person will want to ruin it. Some will threaten the girl, some will trash talk her on statuses, and some will give glares in the We believe that over time, this issue will be solved because the thing about old people is: they die. Once the younger generations grow in number, they will have the ability to make this an issue of the past. We understand the religious standpoint opposing gay marriage, but we don't believe the principles of one group of people should be forced upon another. As Christians, they have agreed to a certain set of rules that they must try their best not to break. But, Christians should not be upset when others break these rules when they never agreed to them in the first place. We in Bluffer strongly advocate for the right's of all gays, just as we advocate for the rights of all religions to practice freely in the United States. Our Constitution states that all men are created equal. For some reason, our society has had a very hard time accepting this truth. But over time, we have been getting closer and closer to making this idea a reality. We believe the realization and necessary actions to legalize gay marriage are imminent. However, don't wait for others to do what is needed, stand up for gay marriage and take part in our evolving society. I am a member of "Ways to Wellness," a group of teachers and staff interested in staying or getting healthy. So being healthy is important to me— and I want it to be important to you, if for no other reason, for my sake. I was lucky enough to be Staff Writer A Sports teams need support when behind during games s a student at Red Bluff High School and a game attendee, I am overwhelmed with the attendance of the varsity basketball games. The crowd is enormous, almost as if someone famous is coming. This shows how spirited our students are and how far we will go to s h o w the other team that we are here to play and we aren't backing down. I give props to a l l those who have attended and have done a great job cheering the players on, especially at the "Pink Out!" game. Red Bluff High School students need to pump up our basketball game attendance and the level of volume we produce to make a more efficient intimidation machine toward the opposing team. I was devastated when attending the Enterprise game, our crowd was greatly diminished in size and struck with silence in a way even I was not able to bring out a cheer. There were many students in our section, but the mass of the group became discouraged when Enterprise brought cheerleaders and a you don't just stop supporting them, you go out and support your troops twice as much. An easy solution is for all freshmen in the back thinking their cool to stand up, step forward, our and join intense contribution to the basketball program. Also, all m e d i u m sized group of screaming fans. We seemed like a dog with its tail between its legs compared to a giant rocket fueled elephant. A very upsetting sight to see after such promising previous games. I believe this was a main cause of the loss that night. I believe in our school spirit. I believe in our school spirit so much it's indescribable, just like my love of food. If I can believe this much in our spirit, then I'm sure that most of the people around this high school can do the same and go to the games to cheer alongside their fellow peers. Dinners consisted of meat, a starchy veggie (potatoes, corn), a "real" veggie, salad, milk and dessert. When we ate out, our plate looked just like it did at home—meat, veggies, salad, milk and dessert. It reminds me of the new MyPlate Food Guidance System that replaced that dumb Food Guide Pyramid. What was that all about?! Pizza, fast food, and soda were such rare occurrences I can't even remember having them. Yes, both soda and fast food were available way back then! After all, even MacDonald's had been around for seven years before I was born! Oh yeah, I do remember pizza once in Zepplenheim, Germany, then again in Italy. I still can't stomach anchovies. Out of every 100 teenagers, 33 are overweight or obese. It gets worse. Out of every 100 adults, 66 are overweight or obese. Here's another shocker. If you are 30 percent, just 30 percent, over your healthy weight, you are obese. Obesity sets you up for pain and suffering, lots of medical costs—and then you die before your time. Teenagers now suffer from "adult" diseases. High blood pressure and type 2 diabetes—both life altering and life threatening-- are just two. 75 percent of your health and longevity is directly related to your lifestyle. The top two lifestyle health risks are tobacco use, followed closely by obesity. Both choices. Both totally preventable. So who is responsible for your health when you are 6? When you are 10? When you are 16? When you are 45? From here, behind the podium, I hear, I see how my students feel. You complain endlessly about being tired, hungry, bored and of digestive issues. You have dark circles under your eyes, your eyes are vacant, disinterested. You think it's me. I think it's you, your diet. When you begin your day with churros and soda, or a fufu drink from Starbucks, or NOTHING AT ALL, you feel stupid. You are not stupid, just brain deprived. It's hard for you to learn. It's hard to teach you. So, for my sake and yours, start your day with 2 fruits, 2 veggies, whole grains, plain water and anything else healthy before you "treat" yourself to "junk" food. I guarantee you will feel better, be more focused for learning and your "pooper" will work better!! It's important. Your life and future depend on it. Kathleen Ferran Health Teacher Students act out during Think Pink rally in harsh, disrespectful manner ast Tuesday, on Feb. 7, Red Bluff High held a rally for the "Pink Out!" During a couple o f moments in the rally, it hit me how much this day really means to me, my family, and many other families affected by cancer. Two things that happened during the rally made me realize this. As I got up and started to stand, I looked out at the whole crowd of students and faculty members in the gym. I saw that almost everyone in the gym was standing and not one person was saying a word. When I saw that, I realized that a lot more people are affected by cancer than I had ever thought. The other moment that made me realize how much this day means to me and a lot of people were when Kassie asked a serious question about cancer and to my surprise and many peoples' surprise, a very large group of people broke out in laughter. I found this very upsetting and unbelievable that anyone could laugh at such a serious matter. The people around me found this very upsetting also and even dropped a couple of tears. It was shocking to see and hear that some people can be very immature and impolite during a serious and mature time. These two moments, at that Tuesday rally, made me see how important "Think Pink Day" really is and how much my family, myself, and other families appreciate this day dearly. I am grateful that Red Bluff High is involved in celebrating those that have survived cancer and tried to make a difference in the fight towards cancer.
