The Fishing Club at Gardner-Webb University is in its 3rd year of existence and is looking forward to competing in FLW Collegiate Fishing Tournaments in 2012. Ten anglers and fi ve boaters launched from the Moss Lake landing on a foggy, chilly 30 degree morning hoping to catch a live well full. The tournament was made even more special for these college students as the likes of local FLW Pros Matt Arey and Bryan Thrift joined the tourna- ment as offi cial boaters for these young anglers. We also want to say a big "thank you" to boaters Jeremy Mikell, John Davis, Junior Price, and Dr. Shonna Snyder for spending their time taking these guys and gals out on the lake. Angler teams of two were competing for the First Place Trophies, Damiki Fishing Tackle Gift Bags, Ranger Hat/T-Shirt com- bos, and Tackle Warehouse apparel. These types of events would not be possible with- out the help of our offi cial 2011-2012 sponsors, One Stop Food Stores, Davis Hearing Center, Da- miki Fishing Tackle, GWU Campus Shop, Smoke on the Square, FleetNet America, Inc., Jacob Vandenbark and Ashlee Nicole Borders Tackle Kasey Ham, Jeremy Fern, Erica Morrow, Jessica Dowling, Ashlee Ni- cole Borders, Jacob Vandenbark, Hannah Lee Galloway, Jason Tice, Marvin Caleb Williams and Mary Steele Thompson. Warehouse, and Bulldog Quik Snak. Lunch was generously provided by Smoke on the Square (Shelby, NC), and the fees for the one-day fi shing licenses for the anglers was covered by donors Dr. Terry and Lin- da Fern. Jeremy Fern, advisor for the Club and tournament coordina- tor, said, "Our Club is blessed to have the tal- ent of local pros Thrift and Arey right down the street from Gardner- Webb University. And the fact that these guys, as well as our other boaters and sponsors, would take the time to give these college an- glers an experience of a lifetime speaks to their character and generosity." Just think about this! If an area has 100 does and hunters take half of them, that would seem like too many. But if those remaining 50 does all had twins, which is normal, there would now be 150 deer where the year before there were 100. Compute the same way again the next year and your total is 225. Ten years later and the numbers are staggering. It is obvious then that hunting is no threat to a deer herd but too many deer for the available food supply is. Besides, it takes just as much skill to take a wary doe as it does an 8-pointer. Mature does need to be culled and they offer the finest tasting venison of all. And it was ours to hunt – 4 of us, that is. We had planned on this hunt for months and knew that we would be arriving at the prime time for the rut. The outfi tter showed us where some of the best places to put a stand were, but also wanted us to scout the day before we were scheduled to hunt. The 700 acres were broken down into 3 sections; the east side, the west side, and the sanctuary which lay between the 2 and to the north. This was the animal's safe haven. It was home plate. It was the place to reach after running the gauntlet of bows and bullets. And they seemed to know it was off limits to hunters. We could hunt on the edge of it and even on the thoroughfares that ran to it, but the sanctuary was the exclusive area for bucks and does alike. Sanctuary is not a word that we use very often but when we think of an ani- mal's sanctuary our mind easily moves to the correct defi nition. It is a place that is off limits to controllable predators. It is a place that is set aside as a safe-haven and that has a greater protection under ...get out & enjoy nature! Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ oward Christ the law. It is meant to allow animals to roam without undo pressure that comes from outside this area. Now think ahead to the place that Christians call a sanctuary. It is normally thought to describe a building or more particularly a room. And while I don't prescribe to one room being more spe- cial than another, I do like the idea of "sanctuary." If there is one place that one must be able to go and feel safe it is to a local church. Not necessarily physically safe, but safe from the diffi culties and even misunderstandings that come from living outside the presence of the sanc- tuary. This safety does not come from a building but from the people within. Let's make sure that when others make it to our sanctuary that they re- ceive the encouragement and accep- tance that can only come from this spe- cial place. If they do we can be sure that when the outside world brings unwanted pressure, they will come running back to the place where they know is safe. www outdoortruths.or www..outdoortruths.org www.mccrackenmarine.com We Buy Some Boats & Motors 303 W.
