Page 14 - shelby shopper & info - 704/484-1047 Tips On How To Have A Safe Thanksgiving Cooking Is The No. 1 Cause Of Home Fires The kitchen is the place where family and friends love to gather, but it is also the setting of more fires than any other room in the house. Cooking is the number one cause of home fires in this country and during the holidays, the American Red Cross wants everyone to be aware of steps they should take to avoid a fire while cooking. Take an interactive quiz on cooking safety Safety tips: • Don't wear loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking. • Never leave cooking food unattended – stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling or broiling food. If you must leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove. • Check your food regularly while cooking and remain in the home while cooking. Use a timer to remind yourself that the stove or oven is on. • Keep the kids away from the cooking area. Enforce a "kid-free zone" and make them stay at least three feet away from the stove. • Keep anything that can catch fire - pot holders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, and towels or curtains—away from your stove, oven or any other appliance in the kitchen that generates heat. • Clean cooking surfaces on a regular basis to prevent grease buildup. • Consider purchasing a fire extinguisher to keep in your kitchen. Contact your local fire department to take training on the proper use of extinguishers. • Always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving the home to make sure all stoves, ovens, and small appli- ances are turned off. • Install a smoke alarm near your kitchen, on each level of your home, near sleeping areas, and inside and outside bedrooms if you sleep with doors closed. Use the test button to check it each month. Replace all batteries at least once a year. The Red Cross responded to more than 62,960 home fires during the 2011 fiscal year. House fires are the worst disaster threat to families in the United States. To learn how to prevent a fire in your home and how to keep members of your household safe, you can download The Red Cross Fire Prevention and Safety Checklist. Downloadable fact sheets are also available atwww.redcross.org on how to be fire safe over the holidays, how to avoid home heating fires, candle safety, proper use of smoke alarms and teaching your chil- dren what to do in the event of a fire. Hun ers Helping The Hungry Hunters Helping The Hungrt The Burns High School FFA Chapter is conducting a program to give deer meat to the U-CAN Bliss Center for distribution to those in need of food. FFA members show a strong interest in this project and are requesting the help of the community to accomplish their vision. Both hunters and those who wish to help sponsor the endeavor are needed. FFA members and local outdoors- men are encouraged to legally har- vest deer and take the fi eld-dressed animal to Wells-Jenkins-Wells Pro- cessing in Forest City, NC. After the processor has packaged the meat, students will deliver to the U-CAN Bliss Center in Lawndale. Every ounce of meat that is donated will go to our friends who are in need of this food. One deer can feed a family for three months or up to two hundred people at one time. The hunters that donate deer will receive a free t-shirt with local sponsors/business names on the back. The following are the different levels of sponsorship: • Feed the Family - $50 • Feed the Street - $100 • Feed the Community - $200 • Feed the County - $500 Each level of sponsorship gets their business advertised on the back of the shirt. Please consider joining Burns FFA this year as they put meat on the table for the needy families in Cleveland County. Do you know enough to worry? Let's say I give you an apple seed. It's a seed from a Washington Red Delicious. You love and have eaten bushels of them. You've even picked them. You know a tree- ripened apple from one picked early and sprayed to ripen. You make your own apple pies. You know just about everything there is to know about apples… …except one thing. I ask you to look at that apple seed and tell me how many apples are in it. You can't. And of course you can't. You don't know what the future holds. It's reasonable to assume that seed contains bushels and bushels of apples in it, but it may hold none. You don't know enough to say. Just as you can't look at that apple seed and tell me how many apples are in it, you don't know enough about the future to worry. You can't look at a life situation and tell what it contains. Sure, you can worry about a lot of possible outcomes, but you can't with cer- tainty say what will happen. When you start to worry today, remember: you choose whether to imagine positive or negative outcomes. Work Positive. Live Positive.
