If it seems we are crazy, it is to bring glory to God. 2 Corinthians 5:13 "Tomorrow is another day, with no mistakes in it," said Anne Shirley. "With no mistakes in it…yet," replied her teacher, Miss Stacey. I've loved the book, Anne of Green Gables, since my aunt gave it to me when I was ten, and my daughters and I have watched the movie countless times. It's not unusual for us to quote the charac- ters' lines and, during a recent stressful week, Jaynee and I said these words to each other daily. I used to think Miss Stacy's comment was negative and discouraging. Why did she want to burst Anne's bubble? After all, a new day provides a chance to do things right - the goal being not to make mistakes. Shouldn't we think positive and believe we can make it through a day without any slip- ups? The Greater Shelby Community Theatre has honored John Bennett with the Opal GSCT Honors John Bennett Morris Volunteer of the Year Award. The award is named in honor of a lady who contributed much of her time and talents behind the scenes during the early days of the local theatre. Bennett frequently works lights and sound; directed the production Taffetas; and has served on the theatre's board of directors. GSCT President Joey Hurdt commented that John Bennett is someone who is often called upon and is always willing to help. Bennett is also a playwright, and his work has been performed by Lost Playwrights in Hendersonville. In fact, Anne's days were full of mix-ups, but they were also full of adventure. I don't think Miss Stacy saw mistakes as a bad thing, but as evidence of living and learn- ing. I try to communicate this to my own students at the beginning of every year. I have an over-sized eraser that I show my kindergarteners that says, "For Big Mistakes." I explain that we all make mis- takes, and that making mistakes is really a good thing because it means you're willing to try. Great advice. Too bad I don't take it! I'm sure the fear of messing up has caused me to miss out on plenty of adventures. Just yesterday, I was listening to the radio with my daughter, Ally, when a contest was announced. "Do you have an Eric in your family?" asked the announcer. "To win, simply be the fourth caller and tell us about your Eric." Ally immediately began to do a mental rundown of our large extended family. "Are we related to anybody named Eric?" she asked. 7,900 Automatic, CD player, all power! Air, V6, I couldn't think of an Eric, but even if I had, it wouldn't have mattered. The first thought that came to my mind was that I would never call a radio station because I would probably have to talk on the air, and I might forget my name or something. I am not what you would consider a risk taker. Every now and then I surprise myself, but for the most part, I try to make sure I've dotted my "i"s and crossed my "t"s. Ocassionally, I go to bed without flossing, but then I usually get back up and do it. Unlike me, Anne is always willing to take a risk. At one point in the story, she asks Marilla, the woman who is raising her, if she ever imagines things differently than they really are. Marilla replies that she does not. "Oh, Marilla," says Anne, "How much you miss!" I don't want to miss out on anything God has planned for me, so I have a new goal. I'm going to imagine myself being all that he created me to be and doing all that he created me to do, and I am going to make mistakes because, at the end of the day, I don't want to hear Him say, "Oh, my child, how much you missed!"
