BFL The Bass Fishing League, part of FLW Outdoors, was on Lake Wylie this past weekend and a huge shout out to father and son, Brian and Cody Hoyle. Brian won the angler side of the event with a catch of 16.04. Meanwhile son, Cody was second on the co-angler side of the tournament. Second by a mere 3 ounces. Brian says he used a new jig developed by Arnold Ledford and had just picked them up a day or so before the event. Congrats to both on a very good showing. By Gary Miller By I know that I am constantly growing as a hunter and fi sherman. All I have to do is look back at last year and I know there’s room to get better. One young man was being inter- viewed for a new position. The interview- er asked, “What do you wish to gain by your employment here?” To which the applicant replied, “I wish to gain experi- ence.” Well, there’s one thing that’s for sure, he will gain experience. It may be a good experience or a bad experience, but he will gain experience. Each hunt offers much of the same. Hopefully, most of the days will bring good experi- ences, but undoubtedly some will bring a painful one. Last year I bragged about my fi fty-fi ve yard shot on a double bearded gobbler, but a few days later I missed another bird at only fi fteen yards. Now I may have thought that I had “arrived” as a hunter after such a long and might I say, impressive shot. But missing at such a short distance brought me back to the reality that I am an incomplete hunter. And the truth is, as long as I continue to pursue this passion of mine, I will for- ever be learning and growing. ...get out & enjoy nature! Outdoor Truths Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ oward Christ It’s some- times amazing that we can deal with these faux pas’ when it comes to hunting or fi shing, but we are quick to give up when it comes to something like our Christian life. We tell ourselves that if we cannot do it completely, perfectly, and wholeheartedly, we’ll just not do it at all. And thus we let our incomplete- ness determine our worth as a child of God. Did you know that Michelangelo started forty-four sculptures? Fourteen of them were never completed. I heard these facts just the other day. I won- dered what the value of those fourteen might be. You see, our worth to God is not based upon how many successful “Christian” days that we have notched in our belt. It’s based solely on the initiative of God to love us even while we were unlovable. And God’s determination to continue to love us is not based upon our ability to be lovable. It is based upon His desire to accept us even though we are an incomplete work. www.outdoortruths.or LONG BED LEER CAMPER SHELL Real good condition, $175, firm. 704-482-6012. It’s a technique that’s been used in some parts of the country for years. Rig a minnow or jig under a bobber, cast it around crappie cover, then move it with short, quick jerks every minute or two. Beneath the surface, your jerk makes the bait dart erratically for a second and then flutter down, simulating a wounded baitfish. When using this tactic, expect strikes to come within a few seconds of one of those quick jerks. The darting movement will get a big crappie’s attention, and the slow fluttering fall that immediately follows will be too much for them to resist.
