Sound Off/Taylor Nguyen The lady spartan freshmen basketball team ends their preseason on the top Varsity boys soccer pushes past their losses Freshmen boys basketball is working on their bonding On the 23 of January the freshmen lady Spartans played against West Valley, Megan Boone shooting the ball. Recently, RBHS freshmen basketball team has just ended their pre-season and now starting off league. They worked hard and hope to keep it up for leauge. Their record for the pre-season was 12-3. Their first game of league took place on Jan. 23; they won 33-31 against West Valley. The frosh girls' basketball team had a great start to league during pre-season. "Pre-season gave us an idea of what the other teams were like, and what we needed to work on for the future," said freshman Kayla Exum. "I just love the sport; It's just nice to know you can leave all your frustrations on the court," said freshman Maria Heredia. The team knows what to work on to improve themselves for league. They need to work on communication, technique, direct passing, and relationships. According to the team, the girls' didn't have close relationships when they started. However, as the season started to progess, the team started to build a connection The RBHS Boys Varsity Soccer Team pushes through the season. After their tied game against Foothill High School last Friday, January 24 th , this season has the team at 4-7, with the occasional tie. The season so far has seen a few ties, including last Friday's game. In the match against Foothill on the 24 th , Red Bluff was first to score in the first half of the game, leading with a score of 1-0. This score stuck throughout the remainder of the first half. In the second half, Foothill came back with a goal, tying the game at 1-1. Then Red Bluff scored again, leading over Foothill at 2-1. Foothill fought back with a second score later, and the game was tied once again at 2-2. After an exciting game as the teams battled back and forth, this would be the score for the rest of the second half, leaving the final score tied at 2-2. According to Jordan Johnson, Senior, #6, the team has shown improvement recently. Johnson has good feelings about his teammates and his experience with them. "I love my team," Johnson stated. "They're good guys, awesome to be around." Johnson also talked about the team's practice. The team is always trying to improve. According to Johnson, they work a lot to improve their maneuvering by practicing on passing, as well as defense and offense drills to improve their performance on the field. Lane Hoskins, Senior, #16, has been playing soccer since he was 5 years old. He has a good attitude towards the sport, and plays to have fun. Hoskins commented on his history in soccer: "I've never been the best or anything, just been playing to play." Hoskins also had some advice for younger athletes or anyone thinking about playing soccer. "If you want to get out and get some exercise, it's a good experience. It's fun." With the team's game against West Valley High School on Wednesday, they are staying optimistic and looking forward to the season's future. The team will be set against Enterprise in the near future. The RBHS's freshmen boy's basketball team has faced many advantages and disadvantages so far this season. The team has learned in a short period of time on how to build chemistry leading to a more cohesive unit. As the team continues this season they face old rivalries challenging them to be more competitive during each game. Some of the advantages the team has experienced so far this season is their ability to stay focused and determined to be productive each game. The team has also used their height as an advantage against opposing teams. Another advantage is the team's ability to hold their opponents overall score due to their strong and swarming defense. The basketball team also utilizes their ability to execute fast breaks, resulting in easy points for the team. A disadvantage that the team faces as many other teams face is that their overall free throw percentage is low. When asked about the teams overall free throw percentage so far this year Dillon Garcia, strengths and weaknesses. In return this makes them come together as one on the basketball court. With the chemistry this young team has it will no doubt grow and develop as they progress into their high school basketball careers as a team. Some of Red Bluff's oldest rivalries consist of West Valley, Enterprise, and Foothill. Today at 4:30 the boys freshmen basketball team will face one f these rivals being Enterprise. The game today will take place at Enterprise. "I think we will be very successful in league this season." Dillon Garcia, freshman. This freshmen boys basketball team's biggest challenge this season will be Foothill, with the first game being on February 14, at Foothill High school. The teams overall standings this season so far, is 11-8 While facing their disadvantages and many advantages the team continues to build their chemistry. This prepares them for their season, as they face somes of their biggest rivals. freshman jokingly stated "no comment, but we are wicked on defense." The team continuously works on their free throws and is improving their overall percentage. So far this season, it has been clearly shown that this boys basketball team has become a cohesive unit. The chemistry between these young men not only shows on the court, but off the court as well. "We get along like peas and carrots." Eric Spencer, freshman. VS. with each other. When these relationships were made, the girls started to become one well- rounded, cohesive team. "We're starting to gel together as one good unit," said freshman Elizabeth Baccala. On the other hand, the girls need to get their confidence levels up. During a game if they start to lose, they have a habbit to give more fouls and turn overs than usual. They tend to downgrade themselves. The team has many strengths as well. They're great on following through with their plays. They cheer each other on, tries to stay positive, 3-pointers, and defense. According to Coach Elbie Doege, the team has a "never die" attitude, great discipline, man to man defense, and they execute their plays. "If we work on our weaknesses and improve on our strengths we'll have a memorable season this year," said Heredia. "We win as a team, and lose as a team," said freshman Naomi Renfroe. When asked who was their biggest rival is for the season, it was said to be Foothill High School. To prepare for their next game with this team, the girls will all push each other to their limits to become better. These girls will do whatever it takes to knock out their competition; they play to win. "We're always pushing each other to be the best," said freshman Marissa Mills. "We all want to see each other perform to the best of our abilities," said freshman Rylee Durfrain. RBHS freshman girls basketball team has had a great pre-season, and are hoping they'll have an even better outcome for league and the rest of the season. If the girls keep it up, they'll definitely give their opposing teams a run for their money.
