Features Page 3 Prom season comes rolling in with exciting ideas Mikayla Moore Staff Writer With spring approaching fast and a little bit of prom buzz and talk in the air, prom committee is kicking in to gear. There are many decorations to be carefully decided upon, donations to be collected, and an intriguing theme to be given justice too! High school students wait three years to get the chance to attend prom and every attending senior has high hopes for it to be the perfect night. In order to create the perfect night a lot of hard work is required from leadership. Upon talking to sophmore, Nicole Renfroe, prom committees dance floor and decorations coordinator; she expressed to me just how stressful planning a huge event like prom can be. Renfroe said, "The hardest part is getting everything to work out the way you imagine it" This year's theme is of a Greek inspired air, labeled "Midnight on the Mediterranean." The base colors of which play a big part in the scheme of decorations are crème, burgundy, and gold. Renfroe said that she feels leader ship is off to a good start and they are excited for the upcoming event, although due Outside the Box Molly Shea Staff Writer Did you know that all chewing gum was made illegal in 1992 in Singapore? The man who made gum illegal was Goh Chok Tong. Tong was the new Prime Minister of Singapore in January of 1992. The ban on gum was made a part of the Singaporean littering law. Singapore has banned gum because of people sticking gum on chairs and tables and people littering their chewing gum wrappers. The small scale damage was done by putting gum in keyholes, leaving gum on elevator buttons, and putting gum in mail boxes. The gum was being put on door sensors of trains which made it not possible for the door to open and allow passengers to enter and leave. Fixing and replacing the doors was very expensive and caused problems with the train services because the maintenance and repair workers had to fix doors and the entire train was unable to be used until the repair work was done.. Gum is still illegal with the exception of having it for dental health reasons or using nicotine gum to help people who want to stop smoking. Importing, manufacturing and selling gum are all illegal. People smuggling gum into Singapore are publicly shamed by government. The ban on gum is so sever because it is part of the littering law. Other punishments for littering gum are being made to pay a fine of $500-$1,000 for first time law breakers. There is a $2,000 fine can be given for repeat offenders along with a Corrective Work Order (CWO). A Corrective Work Order is like community service where the offenders must clean public areas and wear bright jackets while doing there assigned work order. In past cases the media was invited to report about the events to cause more public humiliation for the offenders. The crews follow different workers around to document their experiences. The only places allowed to sell gum in Singapore are pharmacies or dental offices. In order try to buy gum the customer wishing to buy must give their name and ID to the pharmacist or dentist and keep record of the sales. Pharmacists and Dental offices who sell gum without taking down the customers information can be given a fine of $2,940 and be forced to serve a two year long jail sentence. I think that the laws regarding the littering are a good idea but to sever. The idea of a small fine makes sense to me and the thought of making the offender clean public areas as a community service is a great idea. Having a camera crew trail behind you and put the clip of film on the news is excessive and unnecessary form of punishment. The fact that gum is treated as a substance that is harder to get a hold of than items such as alcohol and cigarettes is strange and if a person goes through the ordeal to get gum their name is put on a list and kept record of. to her pregnancy, leadership advisor Stacy Dausse will not be able to supervise coordination for the event the final weeks before and the actual date of the prom. According to Renfroe the committee is working hard to get things done and approved before Dausse is scheduled to leave. One of the biggest aspects of coordinating a prom is having the funds to do so. According to prom committee member and donations coordinator Giuli Colon, Red Bluff leadership does no fundraising for Maryn Spangler the event and instead relies solely on donations and leaderships funds. Colon said, "Most local businesses usually donate quite a bit but it is harder for bigger corporate ones." Colon said that local businesses in past years have been very supportive. Leadership has a list of businesses it visits each year and most are very willing to support leadership and the schools prom. The Red Bluff High School prom is scheduled for Saturday May tenth, Nine to midnight. Tickets will be sold in the student store. Single tickets can be bought for fifteen dollars without an ASB sticker and ten with. Couples tickets can be bought for twenty dollars with an ASB sticker and twenty five without.
