Member of The Associated Press and CNHI News Service Editor’s Note Waiting on the sidewalk for an Albany-bound Megabus in New York City last week- end, one of my friends was not wearing a coat. It was around 0 degrees. (The coat she’d worn all weekend was out of commission because of an incident involving tequila, beer, wine and ribs the night before.) In her position, some would have been shivering dram- matically and talking about how they wished they were in the non-gang-riddled part of Mexico. But she didn’t complain at all. We escaped from Oneonta for a couple of days, but we couldn’t get away from the cold. This issue is about escaping winter by adopting a non-griping attitude about the season, and finding ways to get some cold-weather relief locally. The Joseph L. Popp Jr. Butterfly Conservatory is a tropical oasis in Oneonta 2 O-Town Scene Jan. 27, 2011 where visitors can slip out of the frigid air into a warm environment, complete with banana trees and butterflies. The conservatory replicates the ecology of the Amazon, Outback, desert and savan- nah _ no need to book a time-share in Puerto Vallarta to get away from upstate winter. And with an afford- able entrance fee, it’s a fan- tastic, not to mention realistic and convenient, alternative. The director of a wellness education center also talks about not getting trapped by Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD. A little Vitamin D and magnesium goes a long way for those fighting the winter blues. And stretching the escape theme a little, sociology professor and criminologist Jenny Schlosser talks about prison and what would happen if an inmate tries to escape. She also talks casu- ally about being a young professor who looks like a student, bacon and her love of Jenni JWoww. Even though it’s freezing, the musical acts keep coming to the Oneonta area. Boston- based Dear Havanah and local musician Mike Herman will be providing indoor entertainment that’s sure to heat up crowds. There’s a lot of escapism in the area to beat the winter cold. Keep warm! _ Cassandra Miller
