Pop Culture Backstreet’s Back all right!, and they’re hitting stages with those other ’90s posterboys, New Kids On The Block I normally shy away from comment- ing on the music world, but I had to say something about the recent merging of two boys bands — New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys — into one “super-boy group,” cleverly called NKOTBSB after mushing the two group’s initials together. Like I said, clever. And I wouldn’t really call them boys or kids. More like grown men seeking the adoration of another generation of screaming girls, along with some now older fans from the 1980s and ’90s. I was one of those girls. I had an unhealthy adoration for both groups, which I have learned to cope with by blaming prepubescent hormones and pocket money I could burn on their trad- ing cards and oversized buttons. So indelible is the mark they left on my brain that I can still blurt out songs like “You’ve Got It (The Right Stuff)” and “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” from memory at will. (Hopefully, you will now have those songs stuck in your head for the rest of the day because now they’ll be stuck in mine.) I admit when I saw them performing on the American Music Awards and then on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Eve special, I was torn between genuine interest and eye-rolling/giggling. This continued when I heard that not only were they going on tour together this year, but also had added more shows following the opening of ticket sales Jan. 15 because of such over- whelming demand. I’ve decided — as a somewhat mature, mostly rational thinking adult — that I think it’s time for these guys to move 20 O-Town Scene Jan. 27, 2011 on. Let it go, people. Kevin Richardson of the Backstreet “I only hope they’re doing this because they love it. They can be forgiven for that.” Boys is not appearing with the group, making it seem like he has. And Donnie Wahlberg doesn’t need to keep doing the “New Kids Dance” with successful roles in the epic miniseries “Band of Brothers,” “Boom- town” and now “Blue Bloods.” Fame is a fickle friend, and these guys just can’t seem to get enough. No matter what happens, they can’t get their youth back. I only hope they’re doing this because they love it. They can be forgiven for that. They should be thankful for their luck and savor it. But I’m past them and leaving them in the past. _ Adrienne Wise Contributed photos
