Page 38 - shelby shopper & info - 704/484-1047 Union Elementary’s Christine Hayes Named CCS Bus Driver Of Month Christine Hayes says the most rewarding part of being a school bus driver at Union Elementary School is build- ing relationships with her stu- dents and their families. “I try to reassure both that the bus is a safe environ- ment and they are loved,” she said. “It makes my day when guardians are standing out and we can wave and smile at each other.” For her dedication and skills, Mrs. Hayes has been selected as the Cleveland County Schools’ DKB School Bus Driver of the Month for September. She is the first of six drivers of the month to be selected during the school year. A CCS Donald K. Byrnes School Bus Driver of the Year will be named in May from the monthly win- ners. A kindergarten teacher’s assistant, Mrs. Hayes has driven a bus for 14 years and picks up children in the Shelby area of the Union dis- trict. She also has worked at Dover Elementary and North Shelby School. Mrs. Hayes and her husband, Allen, have three adult sons and are active in Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. Smith imple- mented the DKB Bus Driver- of-the-Year program to rec- ognize drivers for their dedi- cation, compassion and skill of operation. The competition is named in honor of retired CCS School Transportation Director Don Byrnes. Competitors for driver-of- the-month recognition are determined by bus admin- istrators at schools within each high school district. Mrs. Hayes, representing the Burns district, competed with Robin Glazewski from Kings Mountain Intermediate repre- senting the Kings Mountain District; and Doris McDaniel of North Shelby School rep- resenting the Shelby District. The nominees took a road test and were interviewed by a panel of school and com- munity representatives. All monthly competitors will be given a shirt, cour- tesy of Wilson Brooks and the Image Marketing Group, recognizing their nomination. DKB drivers of the month and year will receive sav- ings bonds at the annual school bus driver banquet. Sponsors of the competition are First National Bank and Royster Oil Company. WINTER EYES WINTER EYES Early winter, walleyes tend to go on a feeding binge getting ready for the rugged winter months ahead. In rivers, you’ll find them staged along hard- bottom channel breaks next to shallow water flats. Rubble, rocks, and sand gravel close to flats can also be a magnet as can areas where fast and slow currents mix, particularly inside river bends. Use your trolling motor to control your drift in the current. Vertical jig with 1/8 to 1/4 ounce jig and minnow combinations. Concentrate on the deeper edges of channel breaks in 10 to 20 feet of water. The trick is to keep your lure vertical and in contact with the bottom. Early winter fishing usually means cold weather and gloves, warm hats, parkas, hand warmers, a thermos of hot coffee or anything else to keep you warm and fishing.
