Page 6 - Senior's Lifestyle Publication Supplement To Shelby Shopper & Info It's A Good Life – NOVEMBER 2010 Kings Mountain Patrick Center Event FLU SHOTS For older adults, the seasonal flu can be very serious, even deadly. Each year in the U.S., deaths from flu-related causes range from 3,300 to 48,600 (average of 23,600), and more than 200,000 are hos- pitalized from serious flu complications. Ninety percent of flu-related deaths and more than half of flu-related hospitalizations occur in people age 65 and older. To help you fight the flu, on Monday, November 1st, from 9:00am—12:00noon, the Senior Center, in coordination with the Cleveland County Health Department and sponsored by the Cleveland County Council on Aging/Neal Center, will give flu shots to Cleveland County seniors age 55 and older. If you have Medicare Part B, the flu shot and pneumonia shot are FREE! Without Medicare Part B, the flu shot will cost $30.00 and the pneumonia shot will cost $45.00. PLEASE BRING YOUR MEDICARE CARD WITH YOU. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A MEDICARE CARD, PLEASE BRING YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD. Remember you must be a Cleveland County Resident who is age 55 and older to receive one or both of the vaccinations at the Senior Center. You must bring your Medicare card to prove that you have Medicare Part B so that your flu shot and/or pneumonia shot will be FREE! Please call the Center if you need more information. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD On Monday, December 6th, volunteers will go to assist with Operation Christmas Child, a ministry of Samaritan’s purse which is a relief and evangelism organization led by Franklin Graham involving the distribution of shoeboxes filled with gifts and the gospel to needy children around the world. Any senior, who would like to assist in getting the shoeboxes ready for delivery at the Charlotte office at our 2:00PM appointment, may sign up at the front desk. Leaving the Center at 12:00noon, we will have lunch (on your own) on the way to the distribution center. We always have a great time and we’re helping precious children to get a special gift for Christmas. What a blessing! S.H.O.P PROGRAM For those of you who do not know about S.H.O.P., Seniors Helping Other People, it is a program to assist the Crisis Ministry in meeting the needs of people who need food/hygiene item assistance. Anyone who would like to help is asked to bring a one item per month to the Center and place it in our blue collection container in the front lobby. (PLEASE DO NOT THROW TRASH IN THE CONTAINER) Please place your items gently into the container. If you can’t help one month, that’s fine, just help when you can. At the end of the month, Senior Center staff will transport your donations to the Crisis Ministry of Kings Mountain. The item to bring in for November is Jelly to go with the Peanut Butter you brought in October. In December, let’s see if we can collect at least 50 toothbrushes. This is what you have done recently for the S.H.O.P program: 2 soups, 136 rolls of toilet tissue, 3 cake mixes, 41 tubes of toothpaste, 2 toothbrushes, 4 muffin mixes, 1 roll of paper towels, 2 bags of flour, and 1 container of wet ones. You are so amazing and generous. You will truly be blessed for your kindness to those in need. You don’t have to be a senior to help us with this project, everyone is welcome to join us in this effort. Just drop off your donations at the Center on Monday—Friday between 8:00AM—5:00PM. Thank you for helping us with S.H.O.P. so that others can be helped. Together we can make a dif- ference in this community.
