Exchange Club Firefighter Of The Year The Exchange Club of Shelby honored Jesse Qurollo as the Cleveland County Firefighter of the Year. Exchange Club Member Robert Ledbetter introduced Qurollo. Qurollo is employed by the Shelby Fire Department. He said he was inspired to be a fireman at 14 years old when the events of September 11, 2001 occurred. At 16 he joined the Oak Grove Fire Department and at 19 he joined the Shelby Fire Department. In April 2009, Qurollo was promoted to Fire Inspector and performs code enforcement inspections. He spoke to the Club about carbon monoxide poisoning and said it is the number 1 cause of death by poisoning in the United States. It is espe- cially dangerous because it has no smell and it is 200 times easier than oxygen to carry in the blood system. When carbon monoxide is breathed in, it displaces the oxygen in our blood stream. CO comes from burning fuels, from chimneys, gas appliances, char- coal grills, and similar devices. Qurollo recommended installing carbon monoxide detectors. He said to locate detectors on the ceiling or about 5’ above the floor. He also recommends locating them close to bedrooms. The Firefighter of the Year Award is a program of the National Exchange Club. The Exchange Club of Shelby is a civic club serving all of Cleveland County. Club members volunteer to make our community a better place to live through service programs in Americanism, Community Service, Youth Activities, and the Prevention of Child Abuse. Exchange meets at 6:30pm on the second and fourth Monday of each month at Jackson’s Cafeteria in Shelby.
