Page 2 - Senior's Lifestyle Publication Supplement To Shelby Shopper & Info Red Cross Summer Blood Drive The Blood Drive held at the Neal Senior Center in July 2010 was such a success that the Red Cross will hold another one on Friday, December 10, 2010. The hours are 9:00 am -1:30 pm with 2 appointments every 15 minutes. Our goal is 30 pints of blood. During the Holidays the need for blood always rises due to a lot of circum- stances. Donations of blood do give the gift of life and what better time of the year to give such a wonderful gift to someone else than the holiday season. To make an appointment to donate blood at the Leona Smith Neal Senior Center on December 10th, please call 704-482-3488. Why should you give blood? When you donate you get the satisfaction of helping up to three people from 1 pint of blood. Plus, you get a mini-physical, including a check of your temperature, pulse, blood pressure and hemoglobin (blood count), and a review of your health history. Giving blood is a vital contribution you can make to your community. Who can give? Anyone age 17 and above whom weighs at least 110 pounds and is in general good health and has not donated blood in the past 8 weeks. Donors must also be free from certain diseases such as hepatitis, cancer, heart disease and AIDS. Most medica- tions won’t cause you to be deferred as a donor. There is no upper age limit for donors. Why is Red Cross asking for donations? People in the Carolinas Region (includes Cleveland County) of the American Red Cross need blood every day. About 6 million people live in this area. Also, blood can only be stored for a short period of time. Red cells can only be used for 42 days following donation and platelets (another part of the blood) can only be stored for five days. There is no substitute for human blood! In hospitals across our region, patients receive life-saving blood and blood products almost every minute of every day and only 5% of the population are blood donors so the Red Cross must collect every day to ensure that enough blood is available for patients who are ill or undergoing surgery. Typically it takes 1-5 units of blood for a coronary artery bypass surgery and up to 50 units for victims of auto accidents or gunshots. Preventing Pneumoccal Disease ease. Pneumococcal Disease Pneumococcal disease is caused by a common type of bacteria that can attack different parts of the body. The bacteria can cause a variety of illness including pneumonia, meningi- tis, middle ear and sinus infections, and a condition called bacteremia, which is an infection of the blood. The most common illness caused by pneumococcal disease is pneumonia. Symptoms of Pneumonia Sudden onset Shaking chills Fever Shortness of breath or rapid breathing Chest pain that is worsened by breathing deeply A productive cough The Vaccine Vaccination against pneumococcal disease is recommended for: • anyone with long term health problems like diabetes or alcoholism, • anyone with a cochlear implant, • adults who smoke or have asthma, • those who live in chronic care or long term care facilities, and • adults 65 years of age and older. The pneumococcal vaccine is safe and effective. In adults over age 65, only one dose is needed to protect you for the rest of your life. Talk with your doctor today about the pneumococcal vaccine. Medicare Part D Open Enrollment Fast Approaching Prescription Drug Plan Enrollment Runs Nov. 15 to Dec. 31 Once again, it’s time for North Carolina’s Medicare beneficiaries to make a decision about their prescription drug coverage. The Medicare Part D – the federal program’s pre- scription drug benefit – open enrollment begins on Nov. 15 and runs through Dec. 31, 2010. During this enrollment period, people with Medicare can sign up for a prescription drug plan (PDP) or switch their current Medicare Part D plan. SHIIP, the Department of Insurance Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program, is available to help seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries with the enrollment process or answer any questions about the program. Trained SHIIP counselors are available to meet with you face-to-face in all 100 counties, and our toll free SHIIP hotline has trained communication specialists that can answer your questions Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To make an appointment to meet with a SHIIP Counselor, please call the Senior Center at 704-482-3488. A Special Thanks to all our friends whose support and concern is evident through the many gifts of time, money and resources. Continuous cuts over the years from federal funding sources make contributions more important than ever before. Your contributions make the difference each year in our operating budget and our ability to serve our older-adult community. Planned gifts are a meaningful way to show your interest and concern for the grow- ing population of older adults in this community. A planned gift is one decided by you while you are alive to benefit the living after the death of the donor. The gift lives on, an enduring expression of love for our fel- lowman.
