OCTOBER 2013 Page 8A/Freeman Brookfield & Elm Grove East girls beat Central in volleyball Spartans show balanced attack By Evan Frank Freeman Correspondent BROOKFIELD – Such consistency laced with speed, aggression and a dash of exuberance usually is the sign of a senior-led team clicking on all levels. But what if there's only one senior? Well, that's a scary thought area coaches must deal with for a while. The Brookfield East High School girls volleyball team started hot and finished completely on fire against Brookfield Central, winning 25-19, 25-16, 25-7 last month. East displayed a balanced attack with a total team effort from the middle and outside hitters all the way back to the libero. The Spartans fought through a solid effort by Central's blockers to eventually earn several key points that could have gone either way. "At practice that's all we've been working on is our defense East's hitters provided a strong attack with forceful kills, but caught Central's defense off guard with an array of crafty offspeed hits as well. "Another thing we've worked on is being smart with the ball and able to push to the corners, looking for shots, not always pounding the ball," Polowy said. "Our girls did a great job. I give them all the credit. They wanted this one real bad." Junior middle blocker Petra Bryda had a match-high 12 kills, followed by junior outside hitter Taylor Wilkerson's 11 kills. Polowy credits the successful team chemistry to his moving up a few freshmen each year to gain varsity experience, as well as playing together in the offseason for club teams. During the first game, East's lone senior, libero Erika Hansen, Robert F. "Haley ran all the way to get it," 234401005 INE IN November 3-8, 2013 Hansen said. "She worked that hard to get it, I just had to get it over." Hansen wasn't sure exactly where the ball went initially. "It was completely blind," said Hansen, who had a team-high 14 digs. Sophomore setter Jessa Hansen, Erika's sister, had 19 assists. Central coach Scott Spiess said East overwhelmed his team early in the match. "Defensively they exposed a few things on us early," Spiess said. "We tried to make an adjustment, but we just didn't execute that adjustment. They got some momentum and went with it." Spiess also believes Central's passing attack needs to improve so Central's outside hitters can execute more frequently. "We've got a lot of work to do as far as putting ourselves in position to be successful," Spiess said. "We didn't do that tonight with our footwork and our confidence." Sophomore setter/outside hitter Shannon Kebisek led Central with nine assists, while sophomore middle blocker Abigail Strebig contributed six kills.
